Latham Steering Hoses
I'm rebuilding a wrecked 2001 Formula 353 FasTech and need to replace the Latham hyd steering hoses. I called Latham and they only sell the black Aeroquip...no steel braid because they say it hides wear. Anyone using braided hose back there and having an issue? The XR trim hoses are braided so don't know why it would be an issue. Also running in Lake Tahoe so clean environment.
Appreciate the help. |
You need high pressure hydraulic hose for steering

I realize that. The Latham hoses are 2250 PSI rated. There are plenty of steel braided hoses that far exceed that rating. My question was whether you have any first hand experience with steel braided hoses in that application.

Marfair uses braided.
I had braided made up for the my last boat. Used Aeroquip. CP sells- Stainless Steel Single Cylinder Steering Line Kit - CP Performance |
Hoses
I got hosed from IMCO that are all stainless but have a black coating over the braid. I asked about cutting off the cover and IMCO said others have done it without issue. I did this with my trim hose because the clear cover turned yellow and looked bad. After removing the yellowed clear cover the hoses looked new again.

I run SS braided hoses on my outboard with no problems. I'm not sure about the hiding wear answer. Sounds like something a sales person would say when they cant supply you with the SS lines you really want. I had mine made up at a local hydraulic shop for much less $$ than the steering manufacturer wanted.
