How many hours did you get out of your Bravo XR?

I have Bravo XRs behind a pair of 525s in my 35 Fountain Lightning and wonder how many hours I can reasonably expect before they need replacing or rebuild. As an example, I got 750 hours out of a Bravo 1 behind a 454 Mag MPI on my Baja 272 before the hardened surface on the gears began to wear off and show up in the gear lube. My XRs are still good with no sign of wear/metal shavings in gear lube at 300 hours. What are you running and how many hours are you getting before the XRs wear out?

You must have gotten one of the good XR gear sets to get 300 hrs. Most people I know don't get that many hours behind 525EFI's.

Yes time to pull apart and inspect. Grenaded both XR drives at 320 hr behind 525s with ITS on 353 Fastech. I felt that was a long run on those drives.

The guy I boat with has a 2007 35EX 525’s. He got about 250 hours before the gears started pitting and broke some gears. Sad,

Dean Should post, he has a 388 with 600SCI’s.

What a said deal that merc cant get a xr gear set to last longer beyond relatively mild power and boat weight. Maybe they should look for a different supplier.

^^^ x2

Maybe mercury keeps the metallurgy that way for the gear sets due to the profit margin. That said, 180 on one XR before the upper gears let loose, other still going strong. 170hrs of that was behind 600hp, now their behind 525s since I repowered over winter.

30' boat with single 525efi. First XR lasted around 175 hours. Second (brand new), 130 hours. The upper both times. i was running ITS and a 5 blade prop. I wondered if that was aggravating the situation?

Talk about junk drives. Here a 100 hrs a year is normal if not more. so if you stay merc the next is a number 6!
Talk about a business plan to sell parts!

Aside from metal in the drive oil, what if any symptoms are present before the XR fails? I’d like to finish this season before a rebuild/replace.

WG,
See you jinxed me, ! :) LOL 2006 388 600SCI's, just lost the SB XR at 180 hours....

I always figured 200-250 hrs and it’s time to pull them apart. Anything after that is on borrowed time. Much cheaper to rebuild than to replace.

I don't think you can say they will last x amount of hours, several factors play in, engine HP, weight of the boat, props, who rebuilt them, person behind the wheel and driving style, some will get more hours of use than others, no different than TRS, some can break them with 400 hp.......and others run more and their ok

True.............I have a pair of standard Bravo's with over 1000 hours and they've never been opened up. Almost half those hours have been behind 675 HP, running hard but easy off and on the gas and little air time.

jbraun2828 07-31-2018 11:59 AM

I’m talking about anything 30-40ft with 525’s, and it doesn’t matter how you drive it. If your fortunate enough to make it over 200 hrs it’s time to start looking at those gears.

43' + 600's + XR's = didn't even make it out of the factory's prop testing! :stooges:
