Is it something you could help me with? Thanks |
Hello, I have been following this thread in hopes of getting my Merctrans B back in my boat. I had bought seals from Kirk in Wa so this rebuild has been going on forever. I dont mean to highjack but I am in a bad way. After several shops rebuilding my Trans I installed it in the boat last week. First time I installed it the shaft was not moving and once installed it was locked in forward regardless of where the shifter was. Pulled it again and made sure the shaft was free spinning before putting it in the boat. Its doing the same thing, When I start the motor the trans is in forward but when I put it in reverse it dies. I am at my wits end gentleman. I restore old Motorcycles, not boats.
I was going to buy one of Kirks trans he sold for around 2500 but thought I could save money by doing it local and I was so wrong. At 60yo I am not sure I have another R&R in me and you cant find anyone that knows what they are doing in this part of Tn. When we pulled the trans it had lost forward, clutches, seals and a gear was replaced. I know I should of started my own thread but saw that this one was still alive. The trans shop that just rebuild it is asking me if there is any adjustments that can be made and all I see in the manual is something about the reverse band needing to be adjusted but this is on the port side so I am not sure I can get to it from the pics. This is a electric shift boat ( I know, they suck) but movement is the same as the other side that works fine. Stuck in forward, dies when going in reverse. The reverse band has not been adjusted. The reverse lock seemed to be froze up but is now like the other side. Could the adjustment of the reverse band be my issue? The manual is hard to understand and I have read it 100's of times to no avail. I am asking for help from the folks in the thread. Any advise would go a long ways. Please help an old guy get back on the water. It has been a tough year and this boat is beating me. Greg in Tn 931.239.0850 |
I think I am on the right path now with some help, thank you again. I will be heading down soon with my pressure gauge from my box I use on fuel rails and several adaptors. I reads Kirks info and printed some of it way back when and remember it telling me to use synthetic so the first go around I went with Amsoil but this go around I put Type F from the parts store. Now I am reading my manual and its telling me dextros or type A. Not sure what is correct.
Since this trans in on the Port side its going to be difficult to adjust the reverse band and much easier to get to on the starboard motor so I may start on that side first, just to get a feel for the adjustment, I may even be able to get my Tq wrench on it which will help me when I get on the side needing it. My question is this, should you adjust the reverse band if the unit is shifting hard or do they get adjust once and you never have to do it again. Either way I will get them adjusted and the fluids changed this year. That will be the last thing needed since I did plugs, points, caps, wires, rebuilt the Quad Bogs, both V8's sounded good. I plan on pulling the other trans and go through it so I will be needing a seal kit, clutches one more time. Once again my apologies for hijacking. This forum does have tons of helpful info and members. Happy holidays to everyone. GG in Tn |
Hi Picklejim, I have a Merc Trans II I have been trying to get rebuilt. I took it to a guy that has not been responsive. I bought all the parts and special tool, but, don't have a manual. Does the manual you have tell how to perform a rebuild??

I can say that I took my trans to a regular Trans Shop after having it at a place that installed clutches and a broken gear. (see Pic) . Now the only thing I need to do is adjust the reverse band the next time I make it to the boat. The books I have are not very helpful other than specs.
Toss me your email...and I can send it along. |

I also spent a lot time communicating with Kirk and had him build 3 different transmissions for me. He was always reasonably priced and a nice guy to talk to. The last time I spoke with him I had a hard time communicating with him and thought he might have been intoxicated. I thought that was way out of character for him, then found out he had passed away shortly after. I guess the poor guy was trying to work in the throes of cancer treatment. There's plenty of thieves and rascals in this hobby but Kirk was one of the good guys. RIP Kirk.

Seal kit
Hello all, recently bought a 78 martini with a bbc and a merc trans. Took it out on the water and within about a half hour it was leaking fluid from the bell housing area. Going to pull apart soon and was hoping to source a seal kit and possibly other parts as needed. Any help is appreciated thank you

Toss me your email...and I can send it along. I to am in need of the Merc manual. My latest issue is my boat is slow to go into forward, goes into reverse right way. Also slipped a little if I push too hard on the throttle out of the hole. could you please send to [email protected] ? Thank you. |
Hate to bring back an old thread but I’m also looking for info on how to adjust the reverse band on my merctrans wondering if someone can post a picture of where to adjust it or send me a copy of the manual. Thanks
|
Merctrans
Can't remember if it did when I re-sealed mine but if it's the same as the Ford FMX which it is a copy of it should. The FMX has one and its very obvious, huge bolt through the case on the driver side?. The low/reverse band sees a lot of strain, that's why its so big.

I forget the Merc SeMerce Manual Volume. Scribd has them online in pdf. They are rather large files, and don't email at all. |

Ok I see what you need, I got your pm, I am not sure why I can’t reply to pm, I will check out how to ship and how much, they are heavy little devils, also my friend on this page Tahiti 25 may have seal kits if you need
|
Hey I got your pm with number, I feel bad that the shipping is probably more than the trans(I will get shipping amount) I googled where you are and it’s winter where you are, are you in a rush, maybe try the wanted section on this website, if your not in a rush give that a try, if that doesn’t work for you after a while, I will separate the aluminum piece you need.
|
Hey dude send me your address, I have 4 transmissions, will ship ground so cost not that much, don’t worry about payment and you can owe me a drink
|
I have one, $15.00 plus shipping.
|
This thread keeps going & going. For some reason I cant send PM so I cant sent the info on how to adjust the reverse band. Headed down in a few days to take care of this. Time passes fast when you get up in the years. These boats remind me of all the needy woman I have encountered over the years.
