Left handed prop on single engine❗️❗️❗️
Hey guys, I have a 27’ fountain fever with a single blue 500 efi with a left handed prop, is this set up right for this boat? She seems to run fine! 74mph top speed. Thanks!! |
Fountains came stock with the left handed prop, I believe. The plus side is used LH props are typically cheaper. |
Most formula and fountain single engine boats run a left hand prop. Jeff Wurl |
A left handed prop is to offset a "torque lean" typically.

Talked to Tom at Hydro-Motive and he recommends LH props for single drives to offset torque from the motor. From what I understand though LH props put a load on the Cap which is weaker, hence why I stick with the RH prop and deal with the torque.

So I have been running a 30p right hand on my 27 Fountain with X drive and just purchased a left 28p due to always having a full boat of people. My issues now after reading this is should just buy a RH and not risk breaking anything. I know the bravo can spin either direction but I was also thinking after running on one set of gears for 240hr it wouldn’t hurt to use the other set to balance wear? Any more thought on this before I try the 28p or should I just sell it and get a RH |
many singles have used LH props
challenger was another one to add to the list to be funny many single engine twin prop outdrives have a left hander to |
I ran a LH prop on my last 2 Advantage singles with no issues. I did install billet top caps with 7/16 studs though
|
Thank for the info everyone, at this point I think I’m just going to sell the LH 28 and look for a right. |
I have a max machine worx 2” thick billet top cap on my bravo xr with the larger mounting studs on my 713hp formula 271 spinning a left prop. |

I tested a RH prop on a single 29 and it would list to one side. I do know that the early 2000 low windshield style 27s came with a RH prop. |
It’s has a 30rh on it now and that’s what it came with from the factory. I need less pitch when I loaded down with friends because it struggles to get on plane. My only concern is if I switch to a LH the stress will be in the other direction cause top cap issues or prop shaft stress. I don’t want to break anything when it can be prevented by getting a Rh 28 prop. I bought a LH not realizing it was a LH |
