Default Merc yellow outdrive drain plug gaskets

I've used the blue Merc drain plug gaskets for years without issue but this past season a buddy got water in his outdrive thru these gaskets. We switched over to the newer yellow gaskets from Merc but that leads to my question here for those in the know. Which direction do you place the exposed metal portion of the gasket? Towards the plug or towards the drive? Does it matter?

Good question, BUMP.

When I did mine, Im not sure I saw quite the difference as you describe in the gasket. IF is was to guess, I would but the metal end to the screw and the coated end to the drive. Thinking is, the plug can spin freely on the non coated surface, while the coated surface is pressed on the drive if you will. One thing to be careful about is any residue left behind in the seating area from the blue gasket. I had to pick some yellow off of mine this last change....
