Strange... Trim Pump Stuck??

Alright, I have an 86 Scarab Panther, posted on here last year when I first bought it... Had some transmission issues, long story short had both trannys rebuilt, new bellows, new gimble bearings, both drives and engines serviced, new trim sending units, new bell housing on 1 drive, and a few other misc. repairs. All was going well this year, we did the local Smith Mountain Lake Poker run, and have been out quite a few times. Yesterday was out cruising along and noticed the boat list to starboard and start to de-plane, I look back and see a rooster tail which shouldn't be there so I stop and kill power.

After stopping I hear a noise still, and realize the starboard outdrive is all the way up, and the trim pump is stuck wide open. Anyone had this happen before?? It had just started raining so possibly the switch got wet and shorted or stuck? I had already been driving a little ways though. I killed the battery power, let it set, and turned everything back on. The pump had stopped, but now when I try to trim it down I just get a clicking somewhere from the engine compartment.

I guess maybe the switch is fine, but the pump shorted or is there a relay/solenoid for these somewhere? I checked all fuses and reset those I could find. Hoping no damage was done to drive or tranny during this, I think I was able to stop it pretty quick to when it was up. Thanks!!!

you should have up and down solenoids on the pump that are activated by the trim switches, I’d start looking there

Two solenoids on each trim pump.
Blue is up (blue wire—sky)
Green is down (green wire—grass)

3 Bolts hold the 2 solenoids in place.
Never replace just one.

Normally, they fail open, not closed. Sounds like yours failed closed, then open.

Thanks for the help. Replaced both solenoids and working fine now!

Well maybe back to the drawing board, both new solenoids worked fine for about 4-5 runs, now last weekend did a quick up then down trim, and we're back to clicking. Anything on the pump or something that could be causing this? I'll replace them again, and see what happens!

Your Power Fuse , ( Square Block Looking thing that the wire from the battery + attaches to ) is probably bad .
If the Solenoids click but the pump doesnt run , there isnt 12V at the solenoid posts , check that first .
Those Fuses will create all kinds of problems.

Well that’s good to hear, I ordered one of those along with 2 new solenoids. Will try it out.
