TRS lower unit

Hey guys i just got my dads 1985 Scarab II with twin 454's and TRS outdrives. Its been sitting for a long time in storage and after he passed I went to go get the boat and once home I realized someone tried to remove the lower units gears most likely for scrap money. Which then led us to look at one of the lower units cases and noticed one has a huge crack in it. Not sure how long the crack has been on the boat but are these ok to try and weld or is it better to just try and find a new lower case to swap on. I know cast aluminum can be tricky and i'm sure these need to be pretty precise to work and not get vibrations. Ill post up pics tonight when i get home. Thanks for an help in advance!

New lower housing is a grand, I think there are a few a round.

I have this listed in classifieds if interested

Well I’ve been trying to post the picture but I don’t have 10 posts yet so it won’t let me. But yea I’ve been seeing new casings with no internals for a 1K and it’s hard to believe something this old is still a high commodity. I mean I get it it worked and worked well but 30 years later they are this expensive!?

You will be better off getting a good used outdrive than trying to repair a 40 yo case. Which side do you need? Which rotation? Also its important to know what transmission you have as the outdrive have different input yokes. More than likely you have B/W transmissions so your input yoke will be a external splines

Yea I have been trying to find used ones but those are hard to come by too. It’s the right side and I’ve been trying to figure out how to know what rotation and what not. Is there a serial number on it that tells me? It’s been all painted black at some point in its life so I’m sure I’ll have to go scraping paint to get to it.

Also I have all the gears and bearing from the unit. Who ever tried to steal it didn’t know how to actually get it out once they removed that big brass nut I’ll call it that holds it all in. So would I still need the specific right or left and rotation if I only need a non cracked lower case? Like can I just swap the internals over?

phughes69 07-26-2019 09:59 AM

You could swap the parts over but you still need to setup backlash and preload. The end of the propshaft will usually say RH or LH. You will have to pull that outdrive off no matter what. Its easy. Just six nuts using a 3/4" socket and the trim ram nuts. When you say they removed the big brass nut are you talking about the prop shaft nut or the bearing retainer. Usually you have to have a bearing retainer wrench to get that off. You need 10 posts to post pictures. Just write 6 more posts with BS so you can get to 10

In looking at that and from what I know and hear about TRS cases, you better off getting a whole nother outdrive and slapping it on. Can you take a piucture of the other outdrive at the propshaft and seeing if it stamped RH or LH?

with the crack going through the threads...unless you happen to have the proper tap or know a very good machinist to cut the threads right you will never be able to fix that...and and it looks like someone cut a groove in the bottom of it right through the threads as well(unless the pictures playing tricks on me)....probably trying to salvage the aluminum carrier assembly thats missing....i would get another case/drive

almost_satisfied 07-26-2019 02:47 PM

Yea i pretty much knew I needed to find another case or unit. It was more of hopes and dreams you guys might be like oh yea that’s fixable totally lol. Here’s the left side unit that’s complete:https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...8fa5e3d80.jpeg

besides buying a whole outdrive and not wanting to spend $1K+ is there any other lower unit casing that will work? i have been able to obtain the correct gears and bearings but now just need a housing for it.

No.

Craney 07-30-2019 06:03 PM

By the time you find a case & gears and have someone put it together,it will be cheaper just to find a good used one.

almost_satisfied 07-31-2019 04:44 PM

no i think your right. Im probably going to be buying that one in seattle and just call it a day.

New question: Is there a trick to trying to get these nuts off to separate the two pieces? they don't look rusty since they have been covered in paint for years but i just cant seem to get them off. Is heated needed you think?

Craney 07-31-2019 06:29 PM

Mix half atf and half acetone in spray bottle and let them soak for a few days
