Blocking Low Water Pickup in an XR

The lower unit on my XR has the low nose water pickups and side pickups. The nose pickups are really great at catching everything in the water. I’ve read about folks blocking them off for this same reason and just running on the side pickups, but what’s the preferred method of doing this? Thanks!

You could just have it welded up.
I had to relocate mine back as far as it could go. I just had the front slot welded up and then recut it right in front of the skag.
I have proper water pressure now at speed.

Welding it hadn’t occurred to me, but I like the idea much better than epoxy. Are these lowers just cast aluminum?

Yes

But IF you live in freezing climates you will need a water weep hole in the case to make sure the water drains out or it will freeze and burst the case.

I was planning on pumping anti-freeze through the system, even though the boat stays in a (somewhat) temperature controlled building.

If you don't have a small weep hole at the low point it will hold water and there is no guarantee that you will get enough water out and antifreeze in to stop it from freezing.

Most people just tape them up for a jaunt to make sure that losing them doesn't negatively impact water pressure. If it were me, I would suggest tapping them, and putting in plugs, and then perhaps epoxying over.
You could also choose to install a nose cone with no pickups over the whole front of the bullet.
