Backlash help

Need to set the backlash on an Imco shortie lower driveshaft. After reading two manuals, one says to point the dial indicator to the '1' marking on the indicator and the other manual says to use the "11' marking on the indicator.
Which is correct? (XR, 1:50 gearset)
