I’m no brain surgeon, but that looks like the drive seized while the prop tried to continue spinning and wrapping that shaft into a knot.

Got the drive off today. She was stuck on good, the input shaft splines are twisted as well. No where as bad as the prop shaft though. I found that the u-joint bellow was full of drive oil. So now I know where my reservoir oil went. I pulled the top cap, and back cap, and upper gears are destroyed. Prop shaft is locked. The input shaft turns, but input gear is locked. So I don’t know if the shaft sheared the splines or gear is broke or what. But perhaps rubber coupler is ok then. I couldn’t see any real evidence the coupler spun. How do I test that?
Id be open to finding a cheap drive if I knew I didn’t need to pull the motor for a coupler replacement, as that would be a winter project. Is there a tool I can buy that would engage the coupler so I can try to spin it? I havnt found one searching online. |
Pull the drive shaft out if the destroyed unit. Use it to see if you can turn the coupler spline. Or use a mirror and look at it from inside. If it's torn you'll be able to see it.

Theres your typical 200hr XR gear set. Huge fail on Mercury's end IMO. Hopefully your cases aren't damaged.

Gotcha. I misread it.

Call George at AADS. He rebuilt my drive after
I blew it up for less than a new one and gave me a 24 month warranty behind 700hp. 4 years later and it’s still mint. |
Ditto on All American Drive Service. Great people.
