Gimbal Bearings
 

I'm replacing 2 gimbal bearings on my HP transom assemblies. Any specific bearing I need? Or just the run of the mill standard gimbal bearing.

Standard Gimbal bearing. Personally I prefer the greaseable ones over the sealed ones.

Curious to reasoning. The greaseable fling it all over the bellows causing premature failure. Known boat mechanic buddy of mine hasn't see a non-greaseable fail in 12+ years.

I used a sealed. It failed in very short order. 2 maybe 3hrs time. Popped it apart and next to no grease to be found. If I can grease it I know it's got grease. Though I do think most people over grease them and make a mess inside the bellows. Too much can be as bad as too little.

Put them in backwards......

What's the brand name that failed? If Mercruiser or Sierra etc. who was the bearing manufacturer (SKF etc.) and assembly county as stamped on the bearing?

Came from local Merc dealer. No idea what numbers on it were. Since it was junk I didn't care. I'd heard horror stories about them sometimes not being greased. Found it hard to believe so gave it a try! Well, they were right. Some don't get lubed. It's not exactly a big deal to grease them.

No doubt, I've been greasing them annually for 6 years. Problem is the new gimbal housing doesn't have a grease tube for a serviceable bearing, so stuck with it on that side.
Damn if they were Mercruiser branded that is disappointing, especially for the cost. Fingers crossed the Merc branded, SKF Italy produced units I have were assembled on a Wednesday before lunch! Unfortunately yours is the first failure I've read about to date.

May I ask why? I read this a couple place.

Where did you get the tool?

Great price on the tool. If you put them in backwards and you need to replace one in the future you can simply tap it with a screw driver, pull it out through the notches with your fingers and then put the new one in and rotate it sideways..
