black coating on solenoids

Hi Guys,

I'm having to swap out the solenoids on one of my drive trim pumps... drive would raise but not lower. Anyway, When removing the old solenoids, I noticed that the nuts and studs where the wires connect were all coated in what looked like a black paint. I couldn't tell if it was paint or a very old & dry liquid rubber. The new solenoids (Mercruiser) dont have this coating.

Is this coating something that's required... say, to prevent sparks or something? And if so, what is it and where can I get some?

Thanks to you all in advance!

I believe it's liquid electrical tape. I don't know that it is required, just applied for corrosion reasons.
