Recessed Inner Transom Assy. Steering Issue?
My transom was rebuilt too thick and in lieu of taking down the entire inner wall 3/8" we recessed the thru hull exhaust portions as well as the backing plates for the transom assemblies 3/8"
Now I'm being told the oe mercruiser hydraulic steering actuator tie rod between the 2 drives will contact the un-recessed portion of the inner transom when turning full left and/or full right. I'd like to think merc. allowed for more than 3/8" space between the transom and tie rod. Can anyone conform there's more than 3/8" gap between the transom and inner steering tie rod when turning full left or right? Thanks for any help you can lend. |
I can't confirm that for you, been a while since I sold my Cig with the same steering setup, though I agree it seems like there should be adequate clearance.
Worst case, you could ditch that whole setup and run external hydraulic. |
Anyone on the boat this weekend that can give it a look?

Found the answer on our own, NO. Another fail by mechanic #1.

the inner transom plate is thicker than 3/8" and since the tiller cannot go any closer to the transom than the plate allows there should be plenty. does the mechanic not know how a tape measure works?
