Bravo 3 Brass in Oil
Hello. I have a 2013 Bravo 3 (mated to a 350Mag with DTS) drive that I found a good deal of brass dissolved in the oil (substantial gold sparkles). There are no broken pieces of metal and the drive seemed to shift normally. I took it apart and can see that the shift rings on the gears have pretty good wear to them. What causes this? What is the fix? I see that CP performance sells the rings instead of having to buy the million dollar gear set. Is it advisable to replace just the rings? Any help apprecitated.

Before they were sold separately, I would harvest them off of failed gears that I had accumulated, it’s relatively easy to do.
What causes it, check everything involving the shift cable, shift fork/ cam operation. I would probably replace the fork assy also, due to the cams being the what contacts the rings |
They're a lefthand thread, correct? Whats the procedure for removal? This is a DTS setup so I didn't think there was any adjustment that I could do. Is the wear from too much pressure on the shift cam?

They are LH tread
To get them off, I would but them in a vice using a couple of pieces of wood on the clamping surfaces, then would apply heat them ( with a butane torch) to free up the thread lock they have on them, take a large channel lock pliers to remove the ring. Reassembly, apply thread lock, screw on the new ring, wrap the ring with a shop towel around the top of the ring and tighten it up with the channel lock. The wear comes from trying to knock the cone out of the gear cup to get it out of gear. Dual props and 5 blade single props tend to drive the cone in harder than single prop 3 and 4 blades, and it’s harder to get those to come out of gear DTS still uses a shift cable, that could be getting stretched, that could be part of the issue also |
