Metal shaving on vent plugs
Hello,
2005 496 ho 650 hours. After 20 years I finally decided to change drive oil instead of having my dealer do it. I’m concerned with the amount of metal shavings that are on the plugs. Based o what I have seen on previous posts it looks like there could be an issue? No problems with shifting. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d00941746.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9cbb8fa60.jpeg |
Something is starting to take a $hit.

You could refill it
Run it a bit on hose Shift etc Then use a vacuum extractor with the small tube and get in there see what comes out Then refill and check it in say 10 hrs Just draining, never gets all the stuff out Do you have a reference from when dealer did the fluid change? Not having that bit of data. Plug could be same ... Tech never wiped it clean You need to baseline your unit and go from there An oil analysis could help to, But if you never did one before, it would be a baseline |
Probably would be a good idea to pull the drives now and have them “gone thru” by a reputable drive technician to evaluate and refresh them. I guarantee it will be money well spent. Good luck. Where in the country are you located. We can then recommend a shop for you.

I wouldn`t run that. Those shards didn`t just come from nowhere , your gears are chipping and it`s only matter of time before the drive lets go and cost twice as much to fix.
