Yes free air subs work well in sealed boxes. Free air still need an closure to work right, it can just be any size. Many now call them infinite baffle to avoid the confusion that you can just mount them without some kind of enclosure. Try boxing them up, you might be surprised. The back seat does not seal enough on it's own to make good bass

I couldn't agree more, quality > quantity. I would love to add some more speakers under the windshield, that was the last spot feasible to put anything for me. That would help project the sound outside of the boat, which is so damn hard to accomplish lol.
I have seen a boat with 4 above the platform like you say, but i cant imagine that to be very good for the stability/rigidity of the hull! I struggle with the throught of some speakers on that platform wall, not exactly structure, attached to the transom. Great in water sound, completely ridiculous to hack into a performance boat like that however :) There was a guy on here that cut the kick panel under his helm of a 32 fountain and installed a window AC unit in the hole....almost made me cry lol |
4bus does have some loud clean highs and deep bass. I been on it before still cant believe that much loud sound comes from one amp.
To the OP nice work too bad no other place to mount the 7s higher without cutting the fiberglass. I had to make custom boxes in side panels to ad 2 more speakers per side in my 272 to avoid cutting holes in the glass. |

I've been pretty busy this past month, polished the entire boat, new rub rail insert, and installed a complete JL Audio system. Figured I would share my install in case others were interested in doing the same. Install consisted of 3 pairs of 7.7's, 2 10's, and a 900/5; all of which are JL marine series. I removed the Fountain light/logo on both sides and used those power leads to hook up some red LED strips in the engine bay/cockpit. I drilled some bigger holes in those spots to accept the 7.7s big magnet, also made some new panels(so i can keep the factory ones) at the bottom out of 1/2" HDPE sheet for the other 2 pair of 7.7s. Finished it up with 2 custom boxes for the 2 10s under the bench seat, ended up mounting the amp in the cabin where one of the mirrors were. Hope you enjoy!

mines got 4 jbl tens I think I might try enclosing them in two pairs so I can still access the top of my fuel tank under the seat if I ever need to instead of boxing it in all the way across underneath.

You could always try what Jassman had on his nortech. Quick connect speakers that sat on the engine hatch that were color matched to the boat. It looked awesome.

There is a pic in this thread http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...back-boat.html . They were molded fiberglass enclosures that matched the boat perfectly. The pic is not great though, but I am sure a better one exists.
