Depth sounder transducer for a wooden hull

What is the best depth sounder transducer for a wooden hull ?
I'd rather not drill a hole through the hull. But from what I've been reading it looks like I might have to do that. Also where is the best place to buy the transducer and what is the best receiver?

Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim, I ran a Hawkeye D10 with transducer mounted in the bilge on my last boat. It worked perfectly mounted slightly on either side of the keel. But that was on fiberglass, and not wood. Many variables on how thick you can actually shoot through.
I'd suggest you pick one up you like at Cabelas or West Marine and give it a quick test drive in the water. Stick it to the bottom with some silicone. If it don't work, clean it up an return it next day..

Thanks for your suggestions. I could return it or just drill a hole.
The boat I'm building has three layers of quarter inch plywood with two layers of fiberglass.
