Smartcraft SC1000 upgrade options

Are the Mercury MercMonitor gauges a replacement for the Smartcraft SC1000 tach and speedometer gauges?
I need to change out speedometer to GPS and am looking at updating system with 2 MercMonitor gauges.
What would this require and is it the best option?

Do you have a GPS in the boat already? The SC1000 speedo is GPS capable using NMEA 0183.

No GPS in boat now.
I changed outdrive lower to -2 IMCO SC which does not support mechanical speedometer.
If I am going to update with GPS thinking I may also upgrade to 2 MercMonitors or similar.

You can run the current gauge on a cheap gps module- like 20 dollars on eBay. Just needs the nema feed out.
thats what I have- matchbox sized module behind the gauge.
