removing Whipple off 525, 27 Daytona

Have a 2003 27 Daytona I would like to bring back to stock.

Currenty has a blue whipple installed by Paul Pfaff with 91 hours.

Stresses me out to much. I'm always worried about my XR drive blowing and costing me a ton to fix.

I'm seeing right over 100mph with a 32 pitch four blade.

Looking to trade with someone that has a stock 525 with low hours.

Thanks!

What is everyones thoughts on this setup? I'm I crazy to touch a perfectly running 100mph+ boat?
Or do you see my point?

Just dont run it hard if your that worried. I dont think you'll like going from 100 to 80s. Also you will have to prop down.

If your easy on the throttle starting out and up through the mid range you will be okay. Change lower unit oil often. I have 140 hours on my 600 sci with a whipple stage 2 kit in it with no problems .

I really like running poker runs.

Hard to be easy on a boat running in the waves and other fast boats.

Also,

Isn't coming on plane one of the big issues? Even with being easy on the throttle. It builds so much TQ @ 3,000rpms which is what it takes to get my boat on plane.

Put a 30 prop on it. Its much easier on the drive and the acceleration is way more fun. You will only loose about 7 MPH. Just stay off the rev limiter.

CumberlandDayton 01-16-2013 08:30 AM

Acceleration is fun, but isn't that one of the no-nos with the Whipple? Hard on the engine and drive both?

How do you feel about the rise in rpms from the lower pitch prop?

With the 32 I can cruise at a lower rpm, which puts less stress on the engine, right?

reason for smaller prop is more slip = less pressure on drive

I would think you may be worrying about a problem that may never show up. I had a 2001 26' Daytona with an
XR drive and a Procharged 540, that made 1125HP on dyno @6300 RPM's. I never tore up a drive, because I didn't abuse it. It came up on plane easily @ 1/3 throttle and could call on it anytime without leaning real hard. That boat ran well. I sold and purchased a 30' Daytona and built two 800HP 622 cubic inch BBC using IMCO SC drives which run XR internals. Broke one propshaft so far, but the previous owner had 875HP motors in it so the shaft may have been already weak.

Yup i have a 27 with a whipple 8.3 on it huge tq and hp north of 1100hp never a drive problem. I dont air the boat and take off easy.
