2001 30ft Daytona. What to look for

Looking at a 30ft Daytone with Twin 500 Blue motors. 260 Hours fresh water boat. This is my forst Cat and need some insight on what to look for. Any points about the boat/motors? Says it run 109? High 90s is great for me. Coming from several V bottem Bajas. Is the cuddy functional? I assume the rear Hatch is useless with twin scoops on it. How do these boats handle 3ft waves and boat wash from other boats? Has sportmaster lowers on XR drives with imco upper gears. Imco stand off boxes. Any info on these boats/motors would be greatly appreciated.

Take the Course, Mercs W 500Hp/ XR drives are great. 30ft Daytona Lot of Boat at 100 mph.
But with Theses Questions Is a Cat for You?

Been boating all my life. I guess I should re-phrase. I won't be chasing the almighty top speed figure. These are my first Blue motors.

Look to insurance Quote before you Purchase, Up There could be issue.
Good survey is Gold and Oil samples are Nice too.
Cats are Not for all and Have there Place for speed, when a V wont Do it.
St Clair is In few weeks run down and get Vibe lots of good HP.

Watch out on insurance. Before I bought mine I called State Farm since they were the ones insuring the boat from whom I was going to get it from. They came back and told me how much I could get insurance for and it was not problem with my experience. On way to go pick up boat I call State Farm and tell them to put insurance in force since I was on way to pick up.

Week later right before I am headed to the lake I get letter with my check attached, telling me they will not insure.

On rear hatch you can go and re-due to remove the scoops if you do not want them. .

I just sold a 33 Daytona and have friends that have owned the 30 Daytonas. Positives, the 30 does everything right as far as a cat goes, no porpoise, turns awesome and always hooked up. If you plan to run in 3+ foot waves I am not sure you should be looking at a mid size cat. Even my 33 which is a tank compared to the 30 would be a tough ride in 3+ foot swells. Certainly a wet ride.

Boat wash the 30 would handle that fine. Just know that a cat is pretty sloppy below 55 MPH and if in a lot of other boats wakes at slower speeds the boat will get tossed around some. If you can get the boat to speed the 30 handles wakes just fine.

Cuddy is pretty functional. We boat camped and slept in our 33 comfortably. The 30 has a pretty big cuddy and sleeping area.

Thanks Don. Mostly boat on in land lake. 3ft waves up here are still pretty close together and certainly not swells. Makes for a fun ride

I just went thru the 30 Daytona purchase over 4 states and looked at 2 30's. Bought one of them. I can give you some insight on insurance, ride, gremlins, ect...I will PM my # to you.

Contact Sy Goldberg he handled both my boats at a pretty fair deal and my 33 Daytona runs over 150 which makes things even tougher.

1' to 2' are fine for a 30' Daytona but any rougher than that is not enjoyable IMO

kragar 07-03-2013 06:53 AM

Well, I hope to water test the 30 tonight. Anything I should be looking for?

kragar 07-04-2013 08:36 AM

Brought the boat home last night. He had me out showing me how it handles and what to look for handling wise. I was surprised at how easy it is to notice the small tell tale signs when turning. You can feel it dig in slightly. We spent time running 50 mph and turning the boat to get used to it. I only ran it up to 70 and brought it up to 95 with 5 of us in the boat. I think this is going to be a great boat

Owned a 30 for 7 years. Fun boat. If it weren't for our super rough water I'd likely still have it. Switched to the true Cat dark side and it does everything the 30 did with a gentler ride. 30 is a great bang for the buck.

kragar 07-17-2013 07:02 AM

Have had the boat for 2 weeks now. Certainly still getting used to it but finding myself comfortable with it. Was surprised last weekend how it handled boat wash during the poker run. I did experinece the going slow and getting wet though. Came up on a cruiser and passed him doing about 30 and got soaked.
Trying to figure trim and tab on this. It seems to run great at lower speeds then all of a sudden it loses grip and sinks into the water and slows down about 10 mph. Not sure if it is the hull or the sportmaster shorties losing grip.

QWKRN U 07-17-2013 09:06 PM

30-35mph can play havoc on staying on top of the water.

Eliminated572 07-19-2013 08:21 AM

I noticed that too. 65-75 seems to be the cruising sweet spot.
