Who has the fastest Eagle XP?
Who has the fastest eagle XP. 23,25,26,28? I saw that 28 bullett going 108 in powerboat mag and was wondering how fast these single engine vee's are going. Greg
|
How fast??
Junkie
when sitting in a bar and a guy tells you his boat runs 93 or so ,do you really believe him? When reading those stories, always remember the 10 to 20 mph rule, deducts at least that amount and you will be close to the right speed.. afterall they do want to sell boats!! eliminator219 |
Mine does 93 and its not 10 off. I know what your saying though. I heard that theres a 25 XP near chicago that is really fast and I'm looking for him/her? Id like to know about the setup and so on. Greg
|
I have a 25 Eagle,blown 509,standoff box,full hydraulic,280-s k-tabs.
The best so far is 98.7 on gps...2 people,3/4 tank of fuel at Havasu in some serious heat... The guys at the factory tell me that there is a 25 Eagle in the midwest that runs 110 HPjunkie, what type of set up are you running? |
Playdeep,
I just bought a 25 Eagle in september with no motor or drive. I installed the motor out of my stingray and went out and ran 92.8 on GPS. I've running a stock bravo 1.5 drive, 28 bravo 1 prop, stock shortblock 502, Brodix bb2plus heads crane "741" Roller cam on a 114c/l Dart intake , 850 Nickerson carb and an intercooled procharger M-1 making 7 psi in the manifold. That speed was with me in it 195# and a full tank of gas. Did you add the standoff box? Did you see any gains in handling or speed? Do the tabs get used at that speed? I dont have tabs, but I was wondering wether I needed them or not. What drive length do you run std ,1,2,3" shortie? Are you using the bravo 1 or a 3 blade prop? Is it squirrley or can it be driven? I was kind of looking for that midwest 110mph guy and I thought he might turn up here, Im going to post on some other sites also. Is the bottom of your boat stock or worked on? I will probably sharpen the edges on my botttom after I can get some consistent numbers to baseline. The guy that owned this boat before me was running a 598 N/A motor and ran 93 and change all day. I put a 27 mirage on it myself and he went out and came back smiling with the gps reading 97.9! I intend to try a new 29 mirage soon to note any difference. Whats your elevation? Were at 650' or so here. Im sure your over the century mark at sea level or so. There are 2 guys on the Eliminator forums that have fast eagles as well. Both of these guys report instability at 95 or so thats why Im asking you about your set up. I hope to be there someday. Anyway thanks for the response Greg Maurer 815-218-1603 |
Greg,
Glad your project is going so well. To give you an update on my 1997 25 Eagle XP. 502, M-3 5lb boost, ran 84 on GPS last fall. As long as I turned right slightly no chine walk. Straight, minimal chine walk. This winter I installed external steering, and just ordered an Imco Extreme SC lower, due to a twisted spline and the fact that my wife forgot to raise the trim up after we pulled the boat out. That was a bad sound. I talked to some people about going with a shortened drive. They indicated that it would depend on the "X" dimension of the boat. Eliminator did not install all drives with the same "X" dimensions. I chose to go with the standard length drive because I enjoy no prop cavitation on planing. I can pull my boy skiing at under 20 mph. But I can tell I am right on the edge of cavitation now. I do feel that shortening the drive would help with top speed a lot. At 84 the boat didn't scare me. I think a 3 blade prop may help my top end performance because I feel a little too much transom lift, but I love the all around performance of my 30p Bravo. How did yours feel at 90's? My gut feeling is that an extension box with 2 or 3 inch raise would be the ticket. I can read between the lines....you want triple digits.....go for it! |
HPjunkie,
If you ran mid 90's with a 3 blade,my hat's off to you... I talked to Brett Leach at the factory and he said the 25's get kinda scary with a 3 blade,he said by far the best prop for the boat is a Bravo1. I purchased the boat with the stand-off box,but have driven a couple of 25's with blower motors and no box..the difference is amazing. As KYEagle mentioned,a ex. box will raise your X-dimension 2-3 inches,in addition to putting the prop back in cleaner water...another plus is that it takes a lot less positive trim to run at higher speeds...factory told me 4-6mph gain by adding a stand off box. At 90 and above, when it starts to chine,I move the wheel back and forth slightly and it seems to allieviate the problem... The spec's on my boat... 509,carrillo rods,JE pistons, edelbrock aluminum heads,b&m 420 megablower,Basset headers,Holley 750's(boost referenced),4lb's of boost,no innercooler, very docile set up,maybe a little over 700hp. XZ drive,1.50 gears 30p Bravo1(non labbed) I have only had the boat for a short time,so I am still learning the nuances of how to make it dance... The only time I use the tabs is in rough water,to bury the nose. A couple of weeks ago in Havasu I ran out of prop so I am gonna try a 32p in hopes of triple digits. My cell# is 505-620-7622 in case you ever want to talk boat.... btw,I know the guy that owns the 28 Howard Bullit that ran 104 in Hot Boat, for the test that thing was set on KILL...1000+hp,double digit boost, race fuel,etc...shortly after the 104 run they backed it down in order to be a reliable lake boat...The thing now runs upper 80's to low 90's. KY, Playdeep,
My boat seems to run faster when its on the last step verses trying to run it on the pad only at 60 or 70. At 92 I'm watching the water surface and the fuel pressure. Not much time to play with the trim. Actually during the 92 mph runs the trim was set the same as the best setting was at 70 or so. Are you guys saying that your getting more speed with more trim? Then is the chine walking more prevelant? Play, I didnt drive the boat with the 3 blade I just put the prop on and the previous owner ran it. I just inspected the GPS. that standoff box must make a big difference. Did you say its a 3 " rise box or neutral? Greg |
Ky whats your elevation there? Greg
|
My elevation is 830. With more trim did have more chine walk, the chine walk is worst when backing off of the throttle. My thinking is this shifts center of gravity forward, decreases transom lift from prop.
|
ky,
I worked on the boat this weekend and turned the key on and trimmed the drive to the point where it was running last week and its neutral?! Does your boat run faster with positive trim? Greg |
Greg,
I have only had one afternoon last fall running at wide open throttle. My goal for the day was to dial in the fuel pressure. Mainly I was watching my fuel pressure guage, boost guage, and tach. I can tell you that moving my trim past neutral position did increase speed. Only one time did I move into positive area, speed went from about 81 to 84 as best as I could remember. The sensation I got was that there was a big decrease in drag and the boat really accelerated. I assume I was on the pad. I need much more seat time to learn more. Eric |
Me too! I think I'm ready to try too. Thinking about going to the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout this year. Have you ever been? Greg
|
Hey guy's I'll wave at you when you fly past me.
HP Last year at LOTO was a great time. We have rooms book for this year at Tan-tar-a. This is a good place to stay. I'm sure there are many, but the price is good and you get a boat slip. I want to hook up with some of you OSO guy's this year. I would love to have a monster motor to get my boat going your speeds. I have a whipple charged 502, with a best speed at LOTO of 82.2. I put on a 2" shorty IMCO drive and didn't pick up any additional speed, so I'm not sure what to try now. I am running a 28 lab Bravo. I would like to try a mirage 3 blade because I still have no blow out. I can go full throttle from a stop. I don't because I don't want to break sh&t. FYI, my prop shaft was 5.25 inches below the pad and now 3.25. So you guy's that want to try one can take measurements and see what your X is. I would really like to put a blown 572 motor in this boat because I think this thing would be fun at your speeds. What kind of HP do you think I would need to hit the century mark? Everyday I can hit 80, even at our elevation 3200, unless I have a lot of wieght in the bow. The hull definitely works with positive trim. I pickup 4-5 MPH with trim above neutral, with or without the IMCO. When you get it on the pad the thing really goes. One of these days I will move into the ranks of really fast boats, I just have to work on the financial adviser, if you know what I mean. |
Rockie,
After I posted yesterday I called LOTO to make a reservation for the 22-26 and got one at the Tan-Tar-A . I'll be looking for you! Maybe we can hook up for a cold soda and swap stories. Is party cove under full swing that weekend? Are you running that 2" shorty full time or did you swap back? That was what I was going to buy was the 2". And the space it down until it worked. If you gained nothing thats really dissapointing, I am truly sorry to hear that . Thats a lot of cheese for naught. Ill measure mine tonight. Did you get a covered slip? Greg 815-218-1603 |
Greg,
I didn't know they had covered slips for rent. Did you get one? They have a lot of slips that are first come first serve, but they were never full. We will definitely be hookin up for some cold ones. Yes, party cove is in full out swing. Tons of kick a$$ boats everywhere. I had some problems with the drive leaking oil last year, but it should be fixed now, so I plan on running it all year. I was running a Bravo when I ran 82 at LOTO last year, so maybe I can pickup some MPH this year. I think my drive is still too far in water, or maybe I should try a 3 blade. I'm pretty sure I need more bow lift, so I think I will try some prop cup. I think we are booked for the 20-25. If you can swing it, go a day or two earlier and leave a day earlier. The place is like a morgue after Sunday. My buddy has basically the same boat as yours with a 496 and we tried the shorty on his. His prop shaft X was the same as mine and he didn't pickup any mph either, but he is running 1.36 gears and needs some more HP to get it going. He didn't have any blowout issues either, so take some measurements and post. Eliminator did change the X on the same boats from year to year. I think with your speed and HP, it will probably gain you some speed. I really bought the XR/IMCO drive because I wanted the stronger drive, but it would be nice to pickup some speed. More testing and playing around I guess. Looking forward to meeting you at LOTO. |
Roc,
yeah I got a covered slip. Cold ones indeed. Are you bringing a significant other(s) (female), hope so. My wife will be with. Either way it will be fun I'm sure. Do you know af any other oso people coming? I'll Bring a 27 and 29 mirageif youd like. I know they run faster with a 3 blade. My boat went from 93 gps to 97 gps same day going from 28x4 to 27x3. This boat seems to run flat (read feels like it needs more bow lift) but not enough seat time yet. Are you running a rev limiter? I'll have to check on the leaving earlier thing, wifes schedule. I will see you, cant wait ,have not been theresince 91'. See ya Greg |
HP, My wife will be with also. Last year we had 4 couples and 3 boats. Maybe the same this year. My friend sdelim25 was with, and he has a 2001 25' eagle 496 with the same graphics as your boat. He wants to put a whipple on his, but I'm not sure if we will have that done this summer or not $$$. Other boat is a 33' Profile. And another buddy is having a 600+ ci put in his 26 Daytona that hopefully will be down. That thing should really rock. Suppossed to have something like 1200hp.
I want to hookup with more OSO members this year. Last year a bunch of OSOers did a run to Big Dicks on Friday, it's about 20 mi away, and I would like to do something like that. In July we will see a lot of talk about LOTO on here, then we can make some plans to meet others down there. My limiter is at 5400 and I hit it sometimes. I borrowed a lab 30 when I ran 82. rpm5100 You picked up a lot with the 3 blade. I would like to try a 3 blade, maybe 29 would be the one to try. Thanks for the offer. Have you been to Tan-tar-a before? It is a nice place to stay. Should be a great time! |
28 Eliminator,
Prior to purchasing my 25,I test drove the 28 Eagle that was for sale at Boat Brokers in Havasu...588 c.i. Paul Pfaff built 900h.p. At 4800rpm's I was running 85mph on the liquid filled Gaffrig,upper90's with6lb's of boost is what I was told she would run...basically a sunday drive at 85...very stable I am going to Havasu April 25-26 for the EBA spring heatwave poker run...If I can talk my girlfriend into it,I am gonna run the 2nd heat (80mph and above)which consists of mainly the big offshore wave crushers and single engine cats...should be fun:D Michael |
playdeep,
Sounds like a fun time. So lets see; 600ci, CNC aluminum heads, BIG blower, 6-8lb boost, 950-1000HP, new prop, extention box, $+$-norebates+$$$+$$$$$$$+lotsagas+$$$-0$=$36,836.29 Well I guess it's gonna be a while before that's going to happen. I guess I should by a Cat if I want to go fast. |
Rockie,
You mentioned a leak in your drive. I just installed my new Imco, oil leak, where did you find your leak. Right now I think I might have tightened the filler plug too tight and distorted the nylon washer. What do you think about a different type of washer? I didn't feel like I could crank that down tight enough to make me happy? Eric |
Eric, you should probably go get a new washer. It should be tight. Don't use it if it doesn't seem right or you will just end up with water in your oil and spending $30 on more oil. I think it is recommended to change washers every time it is apart.
My leak was caused by the input shaft seal. It was being pushed out hitting the yoke and trashing the seal. I have a XR upper. Do you have the IMCO upper? Merc. had a problem with the seal being pushed out, so their fix was a newly designed seal retainer. I hope it is fixed now. I should know in a couple of weeks. |
