1980 Excaliber 27 questions
I'm looking at the 27 as my first go-fast. I'm looking for experiences & knowledge on these. I heard that Wellcraft built them for awhile, but this is supposed to be a pre-wellcraft rig. Not that I particularly care whether it's a wellcraft or not, because I like the looks, and some locals in the go-fast circles say it's not a bad boat.
Anything I should know, or look for? I'm an experienced fisherman (I run a 36 CC w/ trips now), and I'm fairly experienced in the boating industry, but I'm kinda new w/ the boats of this style. I've always wanted one, and the time seems right. I appreciate the feedback! |
Decided to drive up w/ cash to see the boat today.
If everything looks good on the seatrial, she's sold! |
27 excaliburs are sweet boats.. we run one with a 540 and speedmaster #3 they have an old school look and are a really narrow beam... the speedster is a much lower profile version, I don't know which one you are looking at. search some of my posts in the excalibur section and pay up for a membership if you want to see pictures :D

We drove up to see the boat, and my brother ended up buying it. We were nowhere near water so we didn't get to sea trial, & he knocked a couple bucks off.
Ran it twice on some short runs, and the engine's full of water. Sweeet. I'm not too surprised, and we've got another motor ready to go in. As soon as the 'charger gets here she'll be back together. Thanks for the input. |
Did you buy that blue flat deck that was on e-bay a couple week ago?

is it a lot of work to change from an alpha to a #3 drive ? what is the advantage or disadvantage with speedmasters compared to bravo drives? I need to upgrade and would like to know a little more about the speedmasters. How much would a nice gimble and drive run new or used.

Corsa, I'm pretty sure it's the one you saw.
She definitely needs some help. The cap is loose form the hull in a couple spots, hand rails pulling up, etc. Luckily we're boatbuilders by trade, so she's getting the attention she needs. She'll get her cap glassed to her hull this winter, as well as all hardware off, and fresh paint. We've pulled and dyed the seats, repainted the window frame white, and replaced the Lexan. We had to rework the hatch & incorporate a scoop to accomodate the blower. The old engine has been scrapped (I give my brother hell because we should have let her run longer on the hose when we went to look at it. I'm sure the water in the oil would have appeared). The new engine is in. It's a fairly stock BBC w/ a new Weiand 1-77 blower. She pulls pretty strong, but I'm not sure she's quite touching 70MPH. Steering is poor. Let's just say she requires alot of driver input. 79ex24, that's a very handsome boat. What kind of speeds are you seeing? |
That boat definitely got my attention when it was on e-bay. Glad to see it's got a good home. The flat deck Excaliburs are getting hard to find. Please post some pics as you go. It'll be fun to see it progress.
