Paint keeps lifting
 

Help, I've had enough. Working on my uncle's Harley parts, can't get the primer to stop lifting in some areas, in other areas, the primer drys, when checked later it has big cracks, WTF is going on???? :mad:

are you spraying over an old finish? . . . factory or ? what kind of primer is it? what kind of paint are you spraying for final finish?

Hey, Dave this is Todd from Ida with the flat deck, Yes I am spraying over an old finish, not sure what the old finish was, I'll check tonight on the primer I'm using. I'm not having problems with all the pieces, just a couple of them. THANKS

Kaama - Do a solvent rub test on the surfaces you are having trouble with - Step # 1 - look at the ingrediance in the can of primer, the label will be in order of percentage of material in the can, tolulene for instance may be one of the solvents - Use this type solvent / thinner and apply directly on the surface you intend to paint and see if you have a reaction.

Heat the panels up nice and warm then prime lightly. Most of the time if you go easy they won't lift. Be carefull on top coats or the same thing may happen. Faster reducers may help also. The primer is very important also. Or the sure fire cure is to strip them....

I agree. There may have been some silicone in the paint and nothing will ever stick to it then. that is why you should always roll/brush your engine well paint on, Bilgcoat has silicone in it and no paint will ever stick on top of that.

The primer being used is Autobody Master Hi-Prime, Lacquer surfacer, That is what it says on the can. If you guys mean strip the panels with some sort of stripper, I don't know if I can do that, the panels where the problems are occurring are the fiberglas lids for the saddle bags. I don't think stripper would work well on fiberglas??

Lacquer on top of about anything else has a very good chance of lifting.

yep . . the lacquer primer WILL cause problems now and down the road. give me a call Todd and i will see if i can figure a way around stripping it completely down. my cell is 419-461-4114. how the flat deck? i cant wait for spring, the LEOPA poker run at put-in-bay is gonna be great.
