How many coats of resin?
I am building a new seat for my boat, and am curious as to how many coats of resin should I put on the seat before I have it upholstered? I have all the corners fileted and glassed with 2 coats of epoxy resin over the entire seat. Is that enough? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Pic is before any resin. |
i would put one good coat on and let that cure. look to see how it soaked into the grain and add more coats till it has sufficiently filled the grain in and has a decent smooth surface. really shouldnt need more than 2 or 3 coats max.

You may not make a friend with the guy that has to put staples in that thing through all that resin :D:D

I know the staple thing is going to be a b itch, but don't want it to become a sponge!! Thanks for the info guys!!

I was told that you can thin the resin out a bunch and that helps those guys out. I did a boat with Tompsons water seal a LONG time ago and it is still as good as new.

Use acetone to thin it a little if needed.

It's gonna be a sponge no matter what you do. Old time wooden water barrels were only coated on one side so they can breathe. You might want to talk with the guy who's going to cover them. If he does boat seats, then he's seen a bunch of rotted ones. He can tell you what works.
Good Luck |
Dropped everything off at the upholstery shop. Before I dropped it off he told me no more resin. Should have all the pieces back in 3-4 weeks. Thanks again for all the input.

Why not use CCA plywood. Alot of seats use it. Never rots.
