HELP....Filling Bow Rail Holes!

QUESTION! when you fill larger holes in your boat..from things such as bow rails (I know some of you think thats small but for me its big...for now atleast) do you need to apply a backing or support on the inner side or what? how do you fill that void. I'm a cherry in the boating world and starting small with the repairs on my 86 BAJA 280 Force just looking for advice on project #1, and advice on how to maybe even practice with the glass before i start.

Grind out around the holes a little bigger like in the other thread. Your actual through bolt holes will be a larger diameter so I would use some wooden dowel pieces dipped in resin in the actual through hole. Then after it is hardened, cut/grind off the excess dowel and use a little more resin to fill the hole and seal the top of the dowel. Gel coat over after it hardens.

Thank for the help griff and since i have one thing going why not ask another question, as you can see on my pic the blue tape is where the old teak use to be and i dont plan on putting them back on since there just screw holes will a simple epoxy/resin work to fill the holes? Like that stuff you can buy that looks like two test toobs that mix as you push them through a single hole.....Home Depot carries this and so do alot of other name brand stores.

Gel coat will not adhere to most epoxy's. You really need to use just a regular fiberglass resin. You should be able to find it in the body filler section at automotive stores.

Arrrrrgggggg

Listen to Grif!!!! Epoxy sticks good to everything but nothing sticks good to epoxy !!!! Especially polyester based stuff!!!!

Griff 01-06-2010 01:49 AM

...and to add, gel coat is polyester based
