Default Attn: GlassDave (Bilge paint and fiberglass)

I didn't want to hijack another thread so my question is, I have a 1988 Baja 226, pulled the engine and outdrive and now I am wanting to "Clean up" and paint the bilge, going after the high gloss look for easy maintenance and looks, what do you recommend for a "filler" that is sand-able to fill in the fiberglass mesh that was just painted over, I am looking to obtain a nice finish that I can paint (Also recommended paint for the bilge).

Thanks
Bryan

You can't just fill over the exsisting mesh and paint.
You will have to abrate the entire bilge. Every nook and cranny.
Once you do that, the mesh pattern and exsisting paint will be gone.
Do a search on the paint or gelcoat. Probably one of the most discussed topics here.

Lots of labor but, the only way to get the results is to put in the time.

Good luck with your project.

aint it the truth

Yep its tons and tons of sanding and if you do need a fairing primer Duratechs VE is great on all levels. Fills and sands good. For a final finish i still like gel but you cant really go wrong with PPG's Concept or similar.

Duarte ch is the good stuff. Get some gel and add duratech high gloss also on top of the duratech primer. The nooks and crannies are more important then the flats. If it is hard to get too and hurts to get to it then that has too be done too!!! It sucks but worth it. Also you can use the duratech for fill and sand and then roll awlgrip, imron, even used jetglo on one that we used to paint planes years ago and it looks like glass

we use Valspar's polyurethane two part paint for the best results because you get the high gloss and it cleans up easer not porous like gelcote.
