replacing main stringer and transom

i am posting here,,maybe i can pass on some info,,or others can give some tips.
i am replacing main stringer and transom. i think the rot started at exhaust. i was told water leaks into transom, if ur hose clamps are not good and tight. well i guess thats how it started,,,but i will end it...hahaha a tip dave goodmen gave me was,,,cut the transom with circular saw,,,of cousre set depth correctly..cut transom up into 6 inch squares,..much easier to remove rotten this way. it did make it easier i think. we start here...rotted... main stringer removed.....nice dark wood..all the way to bottom. what good wood looks like... thats it for now........ flash ,,,,,,,,,out 1989 scarab 38 excel..... started ripping out transom........... fun.......... |
staying TRS, or going with bravos? i wanna convert my Pantera but the orig transom looks perfect...
|
Good work!
Keep the progress pics coming. |

note the putty knife....wood all soft.... this is killing my back,,,,,,boat goes to tiger fiberglass this week.. latest........ |
When I was chipping mine out, I used an air hammer and a 2 inch chisel. I got one of the flat hammers for the air hammer and went to town with it.
Before I did that my hands cramped up and actually stayed clenched for an evening from swinging the hammer and holding the chisel. The air hammer was a much better route and much more efficient. |
c-deezy........some of the areas some ''air'' may of helped,,,but most of it was honestly pretty easiy,,,,
i am totally amazed,,,,,,,,,, i never expected this from a boat that was in a covered boat house on a lift!!!!!!!! check out my putty knife in the transom,,,basicly just pushed it in there....lovely... boat is going for transom next week.............................. throttles down!!!!!!!!!!!!...............july?? flash..out |
With the exception of some Klem gems i have had in my shop some of the Scarabs were the worst. Wellcraft left way to many exposed edges and those just act like a sponge over time. I have always thought that its repeated condensation cycling in a boats life that does it in, not so much soaking but that does not help. In my mind the wood breathes and exhales just slightly less then it takes in, through time it builds up. Having so many exposed edges makes it compound even more . . . . I have no scientific proof . . . just my thought anyway
|
well i can agree with u glassman dave,,,,on the main stringer,,at front and rear edges where cut it out for bilge pumps,,,the wood was totally exposed. i could see the two layers of plywood plain as day. definitely poor workmenship there. boat is off to goodmen this morning.
flash out............ |
I have had three Scarabs and all were done exactly like that. Build quality after 88 was pretty good with the brand but it is just some major oversights like this that come back to haunt them. My 38 Thunder is the same way and will need new everything and some re designing along the way. Actual layup is good for a production boat for that time. Keep the pics coming, Dave will take care of ya he's been doing this a long time . . . .

My 89 Scarab III had the exhaust exits molded into the swim platform. The exits sat just above the waterline. the 5in exhaust tips were installed and sealed from the inside. this left the outside to soak up any water that would eventually make its way between the exhaust tip and cut out. That's an obvious "7 P's" right there (Piss Poor Planning Provides Piss Poor Performance). It did make it 23 years though before I gutted it and rebuilt the bilge.

ramos45...my scarab was the same,,,had that funky exhaust going thru swim platform...some one applied ,,i guess 5200 all over covering existing hole and nothing more from the outside, but then added a plate on inside. but transom was real nice and dry rotted all around there..
i am not sure what i am going to do better exactly...hard to get up in there and do anything. i honestly wish my scarab didnt have that gay looking swim platform. did u close urs off on the outside some how????? flash..............out |
I completely sealed them off. From the inside my new transom wood closed the holes then from the outside I filled in with cabosil thickened resin. If I were to do it again I would make a plug from wood the closest thickness of the remaining void. I now have some cracking in the paint in the circle pattern of the old holes. I ditched the platform and got a new aluminum platform. I liked the old one, it matched the boat and made the it look more sleek but it does have its drawbacks in design.
Forgot to mention, I also ditched the stock exhaust design and went to 4 4" holes straight out the back. |
I love and hate to see these threads. Love to see people keeping these older boats running, hate to be reminded about the work I have ahead of me! Just finished de rigging mine, it's ready for the knife! :(

I'm dreading pulling mine out of storage, I feel I'll be in the same boat.
|
I still have nightmares about it.

The manifold in the gimbal for the trim lines was damaged so I moved the lines to thru-hull fittings instead. these will go away with the new drive configurations.
|
Roger....
|
good luck, your going to need it... lol
there will be a point about 1/2 way in where you realize you have to be out of your mind to do this hahaha... its really the fact of having no experience and having to learn all sorts of techniques and stuff along the way that make it so time consuming. If i did it again it would go a lot faster but im not sure i would lol. |

ok...looking for input here...
sealing gibal housing asm....4200 or dow 732???? also sealing k planes..etc...boat will be back this weekend... time to rebuild it!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
I didn't use anything on my transom assembly, just let the o ring do it's job. I've heard of others using 4200. If I were to use anything it would be life seal. Much easier to deal with in case it has to come off in the future. For my k planes, I either used 4200 or life seal, don't remember but know that you definitely need some sealing there.
|
4200....BTW cabosil is a ground up really fine fiberglass powder..when mixed with resin it acts as a glue or a filler..
