What is going on with my paint/gel?!
Hey guys,
Forgive me, but I am new to being a boat owner. Been around boats all of my life, but this is my first go round owning and working on it myself.
First off, the boat is a 2000 22' Donzi ZX. The boat had been bottom painted with AF paint before my purchase...it looks like s**t to be honest. Now it seems that the bottom was not properly prepped because the original gel/paint above the water line is flaking off. Picture below. I bought the boat from a broker...assuming it was kept in water at some point since it has a bottom job, but now I keep it on the trailer.
Is this something that is soley cosmetic or shoul I be more concerned?
I'm in the MD/VA area, definitely want to get the hack job bottom paint removed and looking into going with Imron single stage hard white paint.

With my untrained, amateur eye, that doesn't look like gelcoat peeling to me. I hit my boat with a pressure washer to get ready for paint and saw fiberglass showing through where I got a bit stupid with the spray nozzle. That looks more like paint flaking off.
If I'm right, the fix is cheaper. If I'm not, hopefully somebody else will chime in.

It appears to be both paint & clear coat flaking. The hazy area looks like it was polished very thin & is now breaking down. More pics would help. Just my thought based on the one pic supplied.

smashm,
I will try and get some better photos of it this weekend.
It is not concentrated to only this one spot. It is also happening a bit on the opposite side of the boat, right in front of the hull step....to me the hazy/brownish spots almost look like moisture got under there and that is what is causing it to flake off? Maybe when that atrocious bottom job was done something wasn't done or sealed right and now moisture is creeping up? Just thinking...I could be way off with that assesment.

I don't think that that problem was caused by bottom paint per se but if the bottom paint is an indication that it was intended for the boat to stay overboard for extended periods , and it did , then if the hull was factory painted and not gelcoated then maybe the factory paint didn't like being wet for such long periods.
The other possibility is that the boat was stored for extended periods with a tight shrink wrap type of cover and it could not breathe and moisture got trapped in those discolored areas. I have seen that happen on painted hulls before .

therealmattyice -- not sure if you have solved this or not ... but we have a '99 33 ZX that has similar spots in the chine areas.
One thing I have learned is that on this era of Donzi's, all of the graphics to include the white on the sides is two-stage paint (BASF Diamont for those years) over a white gel base ... if you look closely you can find the edge along the chine and at the stern.
I 'think' what you are seeing and positive in our case is that previous owner(s) have sanded/buffed through the clear and basecoat and the splotchy patches are underlying gelcoat.
