Need a speedo, sell me your old one?
1 Attachment(s)
My speedo has gone bad. Anyone have an old stock VDO unit from their formula that they would be willing to part with? I know many here have upgraded to new guages. I like the style of the original gauges.
If not, where can I buy a new one? Are they still made? The originals are now 16 years old. This is the best pic I have of the dashboard. I have to believe that the speedos are the same on the late 80s early 90s formulas. |
Re: Need a speedo, sell me your old one?
Are you sure the gauge itself is bad? Speedos are fairly dumb gauges, water pressure simply pushes the needle. It may be(and usually is) a problem with a clogged pickup, cracked, kinked or otherwise damaged pressure hose or hose just not connected.
You've probably checked all this stuff, just making sure before you junk your gauge. |

Well it sounds like even if you get a new speedo, you're going to need to replace/address the speedo hose. I read on another board that the speedo tube should be all one piece, too.
If I were doing it, I'd replace the tube first. If the speedo still doesn't work (water damage from before??), then I'd replace it. |

Re: Need a speedo, sell me your old one?
Screw it all . this is the PERFECT excuse to buy a GPS speedo.
The problem sounds like something is clogged at your speedo. pul it out and take it apart and you will proably find somehting in there. If you have a clamp on the hose nad it still pops off and leeeks you defenitly have a blockage. It's probably just some foriegn object in the speedo at the fitting or it could be the actuator assembaly for the needle itself is stuck. |
Re: Need a speedo, sell me your old one?
I bought a Nordskog GPS Speedo last year for my '89 292 and love it. :D I had to do this as I installed Imco nosecones and therefore lost the pickup tube on the drive.
Fits right in the old speedo hole. Looks good too (you don't need the square piece of plastic around the gauge that the old VDO had). PS: Dont try to put the GPS receiver under the dash, it won't receive the signal properly. I just used 2 sided velcro and put the receiver on the gunnel by the throttles. |
Re: Need a speedo, sell me your old one?
Yeah, I have an inexpensive GPS by Garmin. It doesn't work quite right because the speed never reaches 75mph. :)
I guess I'll pull the speedo and water tube and see what is going on in there. If I change to a different style speedo then I would just have to change all of the guages to match! |

Re: Need a speedo, sell me your old one?
See your 292 Thread.
I was 70 by old VDO prior to nosecones and Stainless Marine exhaust. Maybe a true 67? I did the exhaust, Imco Nosecones, and Nordskog GPS speedo all at once. Boat picked up 300 rpm to 5350  so I had to ditch the 23 Mirage (old style..original to the boat?) for Mirage + 25's. So now 70 on GPS at 4950. Would guess I picked up 3 MPH, 5 on a good day which I am happy with. Do some searching aroung OSO. From reading other owners posts I probably should have gone with Hydromotive 4 blades. Others know more about the Hydromotives than I do. |

Re: Need a speedo, sell me your old one?
My boat is a 1988 and has had motors installed. Said they where 420 motors by Carolina Performance . OK What I do know is they are Gen5 454,s no fuel pump mounting on block, With ( Zuzs ? ) Alui. intakes, with stock carbs and exhaust. It was pulling 5000 rpm not full throddle with the belts squeeling so that was that. Have just got boat back from shop to fox the steering and installed 25 p Mirage props. What is the difference in the + and the reg.

Re: Need a speedo, sell me your old one?
Hijackers...all of you!
Anyway I monkeyed around with the speedo pick up tube, it had become disconnected. I reconnected the tube...but speedo still didn't move. I haven't determined if the tube is blocked or kinked or if the speedo is kaput. I put that project on hold because the recirculating pump on the motor is leaking so that needs to get fixed first. It is always something. |
Re: Need a speedo, sell me your old one?
You can check the gauge buy using an air compressor:
40 mph 21.84 psi 50 mph 34.13 psi 70 mph 66.89 psi 90 mph 110.56 psi As you can see the small lines they put on these are usually not capable of the higher pressures. Most likely the line. |
