Carb
my boat mechanic tried to rebuilt my holley carb on my 454, he said it is to far gone and needs replaced. Does any one know a good place to buy a new or a rebuilt one. The current set up is a holley 750 double pump on an elderbrock intake, any input would be appreciated
thanks PJ |
Re: Carb
I can't imagine a carb so far gone it can't be rebuilt. Holleys are far and away the easiet carb to rebuild.

Re: Carb
Too far gone???????????????????
What could possiby be too far gone? All you need to do is get a rebuild kit and rebuild it! I think your mechanic is either trying to rip you for some cash or he's just too lazy to rebuild your carb. Even if you've never rebuilt one, it's not that hard. The rebuild kit comes with instructions and set-up specs. Just take your time, make notes as you disassemble, a few pics might help, and have at it. A few beers and you'll be done. :drink: |
Re: Carb
Those carbs are relatively simple, and most speed shops have the parts to build one from scratch, so if any abnormal parts are gone they can be replaced.
The only thing I could think of would be if the housing itself was cracked...maybe he cracked it.... The only thing that is going to suck potentially is that you'll most likely get your carb back from this guy in a basket - which means you'll probably have to pay more than the standard rebuild cost from another shop. |
Re: Carb
thanks for the input, he said he rebuilt it and put it back on and still not running right. he said he soaked it for two days and it is still gummed up on the inside, I honestly don't think he is trying to rip me off he stands to loose to much money, there are 4-5 of my friends that take our boats there for service
I don't know I'm trying to call him now to see what is going on with it thanks PJ |
Re: Carb
A for real CARB shop could do it. Like when your sick with something in particular you go to a specialist  :D

Re: Carb
I'm guessing that the throttle plates or throttle shafts are worn. If they won't seal, it will make for a rough idle and some mid range problems. Besides that, just gaskets and seals. Might be time to replace it. Holley makes a marine carb or Demon. They have a blow-back valve installed under the base plate.
Just my 2 cents. Dave |

Re: Carb
Is that Miami Valley Marine? I saw a 223 there a few weeks back.....
|
Re: Carb
yes its at mvm, interior is all out and now its dirty as hell, still need to finish buffing the bow and reclean it. also about to restripe it thats why it looks so naked. I also just got the new bird emblems for it, don't no if you looked at the sundeck but the rest of the interior is in good shape. What did u think potiential?
here is the update I was at miami valley marine yesterday, there was 6+ gallons of water in my gas tank, which he said caused the idle plate or something like that to get crystalized so bad that it needs replaced, he is working with a local carb shop to get the part. He said it runs good just won't idle, so there is hope for that carb yet. Pressure tested the fuel system and its good, he said I got a bad tank of gas (SPEEDWAY IN VANDALIA SO BEWARE) I will never use speedway again, so hopefully everything is going to be ok |

Well It looked a little rough on the inside and the outside needed some TLC but hey if you saw my boat it looked twice as bad when I first got it.....Your boat looks solid enough though. Just gotta do alot of the little things! I know I spent 5 years getting the little things straight. Great thing about Formula's is the fact that that is usually all you have to do to an older bird. How is your cabin? As far as your gas I Doubt you got all that water from one place....If you didn't fill her up or have fresh gas in her before storage that might be some of the problem...Has the boat been sitting alot between usuage? If it was me I would buy several fuel/water seperators and change them every hour or so of use till you are sure no water is still left in the tank..........I think I read you go to Ceasers Creek somewhere...When do you usually go? Hope to make it out tommorow. If you see me out just wave!

Re: Carb
I would HIGHLY reccomend YIPES STRIPES for all stripes and decals.....They have done several jobs for me and are priced fair and have an outstanding reputation.....just my .02cents

Re: Carb
my dad was the original owner bought it new when I was 9, cabin is in great shape ( red veluer LOL )except for the carpet, the bilge area in the cabin is killing the carpet with water. The inside cleans up well, the sundeck makes me want to puke but one thing at a time. A new cover is next after this bill, the front seats are in good condition and everything works inside the vents you probly saw missing are in my garage (painting them). He pumped out my tank but thats a good idea about the new filters. Do I need to prime those with gas or just screw them on? About it sitting between uses, I usally use it at least 4-5 times a month, but I was having this carb issue at the end of last seaon so I didnt fill it up before storage. I am just glad the tank is ok ($$$$$) next project is to see why my trim tabs arent working, when I push the buttons it does nothing but it draws a huge amount of current according to the volt gauge
here is my to do list for hopefully this year new trailer tires new cover new snap-in (lost in buddies shed fire) sundeck recovered and bottom of back seat recovered 1+ years down the road repaint tubular swim platform then start going for more power switch outdrive to bravo 1 or better ect.. ect ... ect you see anything I might be missing? might be at ceasars creek tomm in my buddies rinker if I see ya Ill give you a wave by the way sweet boat where did you get the paint work done? I will check out yipes they do good work |
Re: Carb
Are you sure it's not the anchor drain that is draining into the cabin?
|
Re: Carb
where is the anchor drain located? do you think that could be my problem?
thanks PJ |
Re: Carb

Mine was located up front about 1/2 way down and 2-4 inches back of where the hull sides come together on the front of the boat. It was about 1/4" in dia.

Re: Carb
I thought that was what you where talking about. Is there a plug for it or how does it work ( boat still at mvm so I can't just go look at it)
thanks for the pics and all the help PJ |
Re: Carb
IF I remember after talking to Formula they told me it was a drain for the anchor locker.....I don't have one(anchor locker) but it drains from the hole into the floor of the cockpit....Bad and sloppy design...I put some Marine-Tex on the inside and filled it with silicone on the outside. Alot of other brands have a clam-shell cover over it with the opening facing the back of the boat......
|
Re: Carb
thanks, I will do the same when I get the boat back
