Man burns hands in powerboat fire

DEALE -- A boat fire sent a Pasadena man to the hospital yesterday with second-degree burns to his hands, county Fire Department officials said.

Robert Montgomery, 57, was on his 31-foot performance boat at Gates Marine, 5918 Deale-Churchton Road, when it caught fire, said Lt. Frank Fennell.

Division Chief Stuart McNicol said the call came in at 2:57 p.m. and 25 firefighters were on hand as well as the county fireboat.

Mr. Montgomery went to Anne Arundel Medical Center in Parole. He was treated and released.

Chief McNicol said the 1994 Formula sustained $75,000 in damage. Another boat had $10,000 of damage and the pier suffered $500 of damage.

He said the cause of the fire is under investigation. Lt. Fennell said Mr. Montgomery was winterizing the boat in preparation to pull it from the water.

Alright...I hope he is ok and that sucks......but,
1994 31' Formula, or F303 SR1 (30' 3")...Winterizing it IN THE WATER? (must be a new way of doing it) Fogging the motors, he would have to pull it without running it or the lake is full of antifreeze...maybe.

1994 303 = $75k. Not if I'm the insurance adjuster or looking to buy one. A little on the high side.

Like I said, hope he is OK, but the story is a little unbelievable.

May have been a 31SS. The paper guys wouldn't know the difference between a "performance" boat and a "day cruiser" unless the reporter was a boater.

In any event, I agree that there is not much actual winterization you can do in the water. Maybe run some Stabil through it, that's about it.

Maybe his idea of winterizing was adding a space heater to the cabin?

Could have been a 31PC. I run a 1994 31PC and I do winterize some stuff at marina, generator, air, water system. I also change oil in the water prior to pulling to winterize the motors.

Good place to respond to your questions, Mike. Kinda under the radar hidden in this post...Don't need to get into heavy details, but the shopping is going well!! No damage to the broken motor block...block checked out all OK, crank and bearings look like new, 7 Great pistons and 1 bad camshaft and lifter and 2 bad valves....SO, Heads are coming soon, water pumps are here, couplers are on order, bad motor block is almost ready to be short block assembled , good motor goes on the dyno this weekend and that's all for now!! I love spending money at Christmas time! Looking forward to dnyo'ing the new combo.

Later,
Dave
