Need Some Advice On 312 Vs 292 Fastech

Hello All...i'm Getting Bored With Wake Boarding And Ready To Move To Something Different. I Have Researched Many Different Boats And Have Come To The Conclusion That Formula Is The Way I Want To Go. I Live In Phoenix Area And Will Be Using The Boat Around Here And On The Colorado River Including Parker, Lake Powell And Havasu. I Am Looking At The 292 And The 312. I Have Found A Very Nice 2003 312 With 496 Ho's For The Same Price As Some Of The 292's With 6.2's Are Going For. I Would Like To Think That The Bigger Boat For About The Same Price Would Be A Better Boat For Me (keep In Mind That I Have Ruled Out The 353 For Size And Cost. I Want To Stay Below 100k) I Have A Few Concerns About Buying A Boat That Is Discontinued. I Guess The First Question Is Why Did Formula Discontinue The Boat??? Is It Still Considered A Desirable Boat? Will I Lose My Butt On Resale Because It Is Discontinued Vs The 292? Are The 6.2's Enough Power For The 292? Any Help That You Guys Can Give Would Be Greatly Appreciated!!!
Thx.
Russel

Re: Need Some Advice On 312 Vs 292 Fastech

I bought a 312 last year and have been happy. A friend has a 02/03 292 and although it is nice several people have commented how much bigger my 312 is. Mine with 502's runs 72-74 GPS so HO's should give you another MPH than me. The 312 ended because after the twin step 292 people would step up to the twin step 353. (312's have a small single step). I have gotten mine to chine walk when trying to get every ounce of speed out of it. Several have mentioned the same thing at 72-74mph but you can correct it, just pay attention at that speed. (you should be anyway!!!)

Russell, Just got done shopping for a new boat. I hear the 292 will run around 70mph with the 6.2 's. The boat is smaller(obviously). The twin small block engines are much more economical to operate. Check out the fuel consumption rates vs. the 502 or 496 set ups in the 312. A friend of mine just sold a 312, it was a real nice boat. Probably didn't help at all, did I ?

I get whichever one was in the best shape. I probably wouldn't get a 312 with smallblocks, and yes, they are out there.

Btw, great choice on choosing Formula! :evilb:

312....BUT:

I'd buy dgduck13's 311 for sale on here LONG before I'd buy a 292 or a 312. It's a hell of a lot more boat and you'd have a lot of money left in your wallet. The difference between a 311 and a 312 is unbelievable. You have to be in/on both to really see the difference. The 312 seems like it's at least 3 feet smaller in size. Just my two cents.

Last year, I moved from the Ohio River to the Chesapeake Bay with a 292 FASTech. The 292 is a great boat...decent speed for stock power, nice ride, outstanding quality. I never used the cabin on the Ohio River since my marina was 10 minutes from home. When I arrived at the Chesapeake, most of the performance boats were larger due to big water. So in April, I traded up to a race-prepared F-2 382 with stock power. This boat was incredible in every way except it did not have a cabin and I rarely had time to use it due to a busy work schedule this year. At the end of the season, I sold the 382 and just recently picked up a used 312 for about half the investment. That makes three FASTechs in seven months. If next season is anything like this year, I won't have to worry about having six figures tied up without using the boat. It is also nice to have a cabin again with the size of the Chesapeake. Unfortunately, I can't give you any advice between the 292 and 312 until the Spring when I get a chance to make a fair comparision. The boat feels bigger, but I will be interested to see if there is much of a difference in the ride (with 1,000 pounds more weight and one less step). I'll keep you posted.

I had 312 2000 with 454 and it ran fine. I just bought a 2005 292 6.2 and I like it much better, and yes it is just alittle bit smaller but it rides sweet and the motors run great. But mabe it is the differance in years and updated technology and ammenities. Myself I would go for the 292 it has a better ride.
Just my opinion

I have a very clean "04 292 for sale. Ck the classifieds. Really need to sell. Great boat, hate to part but family is growing. I run with several 353's and 382's, and no it is not as fast wide open but cruises with them, easier to dock and maneuver, and when we pull up to the fuel dock they are all jealous :). Very comfortable boats. Warranty till '09.
