382 Prop suggestions
Happy New Year All! :drink:
I would like any and all feedback from 382 owners, knowledgeable experts or what the hell, anyone who wants to voice their opinion. My lovely lady and I have a 1999 382 w/Ext. boxes and about 500hp+ at each prop through 1.5 Bravo performance drives :D . I am currently running (before winter) Labbed 28p B1s and I'm pushing the limiters (5500) at 76mph. If you have 5blade experience or any other input please reply. I posted a similar request in the prop section a few months ago, but it's winter and I'm bored and want more input. Thx, Tom |
Re: 382 Prop suggestions
I think Troutly switched to 5 blades and likes them on his 38

Re: 382 Prop suggestions
Tom,
I have a 1998 382 with 620 hp @ 5500 rpm at the flywheel, no boxes. I have tried several props, some of them 5 blade and the best prop for my combo is the bravo one four blade. I run my non-labbed 28's at 5500- 5600 @ 83 mph, I bought a new set of 30's that will turn 5300 rpm. I plan on getting the 30's labbed this winter. The cruise speed is much better with the 30's, but the motors like the rpm a little higher. I hope this helps. Jeff |
Re: 382 Prop suggestions
Hey All,
Thanks for the input. Troutly, what's your setup? |
Re: 382 Prop suggestions
We just put a set of 26Maximus on my old 382 (500efi's, stellings) They have about a 2 1/2" diffuser. The boat is a little slow on plane, but believe it or not, it is running 80. I couldn't believe my old boat was running that well, but it is. I will find out more of the details when they finish with it, but so far I have been thoroughly impressed.

Re: 382 Prop suggestions
I thought those numbers would draw some questions.
I don't have all the answers but I'll get them from my guy later today. I was only running 72-73 before, but was never propped right, so it wasn't a good comparison. I do know that they are turning out, and like I said have a pretty tall diffuser ring on them. I'll get the exact specs and post them later. Corey |
Re: 382 Prop suggestions
I did find out that they are 26" cut back to a 25, and they are 15" diameter. They are labbed as well. Thats about all I know. He is still doing a little work on them to get them just how he wants them.

Corey I'll post when we figure out what we're doing and have results :drink: |
Re: 382 Prop suggestions
I guess running in ice rather than water is tough on props :D :D

I'll be calling you in a month or two to hook me up with some Maximus wheels. No sense putting the $$$ into fixing the hydros when I really want some five blade round ears on the old girl :) I noticed in the pics of your VERY NICE! boat, that you're spinning in. What's your call on that? Handle good/bad? Faster? |
Re: 382 Prop suggestions
I'm also turning in. It takes a little more anticipation and finess in tight docking sutuations especially in windy conditions, but I have never noticed any ill-handling at speed and the wake is really flat like Troutly stated. I do not know if it made any difference in speed at WOT as the boat was set up this way when I bought it.

Re: 382 Prop suggestions

Re: 382 Prop suggestions
Hey JohnB,
Great information, I look forward to your updates. :drink: How did cruise speed look with your experiments? |
Re: 382 Prop suggestions
Crit, Bravos really blow on this heavy boat, especially with boxes. This is close, B1's are from Formula test, Hydros are actual.

Re: 382 Prop suggestions
John B, and Everybody else
Thanks lots for the information, it's been very helpful. I think we are going to start out with a set of Labbed 28 x 15.25 Maximus and go from there. Based on the rpm numbers from the 28 Labbed B1s we've been running. the Maximus props should be pretty close to what we're looking for. :drink: Tom |
Re: 382 Prop suggestions
Is it better to turn the props in or out? I was told there is some speed advantages to turnning them out. Im running with them turning out on a 04 382 fastech with labbed 26 maximus.

Finally got a chance to test the Hydro P5X labbed and 27.5 pitch. This was in the Fla Keys on the Miami Boat Show Poker Run last weekend. With 6 people, bags and coolers plus 120 gallons of fuel, we ran for 10 miles experimenting with trim and ultimately hit 80.0 on GPS at 5380 +-on digital tacks. Total weight was probably 12600 lbs. I thought this was unbelievable for the weight. Only problem now is I need more pitch since we were just hitting the rev limiter. BTW the optimum trim was right about 7.

I have extension boxes, 1.5 drives, and unlabbed Bravo 28's on my 382 and run 84 mph @ 5400. You have some major slip issues with your props. |
Re: 382 Prop suggestions
Red Dog, My 382 came with Labbed 31 Bravos, 525's + Stellings and ran 80 (gps), threw the mufflers it came with, at 5200. It is difficult to understand how your similar combination ran 84 with non-labbed 28's. Maybe you are not trimmed out to where I find the best speed, at 7.

Re: 382 Prop suggestions
I think a lot depends on the labbing recipie and who labbed the props. I am running 645 H.P.(600+ ft/lb torque) Sterlings well below the power peak. I only trim to 4 or 5 and begin to scrub speed beyond that. I also have nosecones and turn props in, which probably accounts for some difference too.
