Mine did exactly the same thing. It cracked 360 degrees around the base, the fluid made a mess and had some odor!
I will send it back to Ritchie as soon as I uncover the boat.

I do have a GPS but I still want to keep all of the original 311 intact and in good shape.
I do my boating mainly on the Hudson River jeff32, with an occasional trip to the Jersey shore area.
That is still quite south for me! Have fun!
