Muffler Opinions?

I've decided to get some mufflers. My boat has open exhaust and it is just too loud at idle to have a normal conversation.

I've checked out all the muffler threads in the Q&A section.

Here's the choices that I like.

GGB Extreme's. Open muffler. Good sound reduction all the time. Advertised as no power loss. Clamp on available.

CMI's new muffler. This has a spring loaded baffle on it that makes it run quite until exhaust back pressure opens the baffle at approximately 1/2 throttle. Maybe quieter than GGB's at idle and louder than GGB when running. Clamp on available.

Teague's ST-450 electrically switchable exhaust. Same concept as the CMI but has a switch on the dash to choose whether opened or closed. This has the neato factor, but I don't know if it would be good to run them closed at high rpm anyway and they would be the hardest to install.

Anyone with some experience care to offer their opinion? I'm tempted to get the CMI's because I don't think the boat is too loud once underway. It only bugs me at idle when I'm trying to talk.

Thanks,
Garrett

I find myself in a similar situation after removing my silent thunder and going with Livorsi 4" exhaust tips. Saved about 75lbs of fiberglass :D

Anyone have any before and after sound clips from their muffler set up? Any input on the new CMI's?

Definatley go with the GGB's I have the thru transom version on my formula, And it did reduce the db's to around 87 on my 502's no rpm loss

Garrett,

The switchable mufflers are not legal at most of the lakes...has to be something that can't be swithced on the fly.

I just installed some new mufflers from Precision Marine (Huntington Beach) they work great no power loss.

Garrett,

Just installing the GGB Extreme clamp-ons on mine. Won't know results for about another month.

Where did you find info on CMI's new muffler? I was @ their website and did not see anything about a spring loaded muffler. I too want to remove the silent thunder & go with some mufflers. I would like to find a muffler that is quiet at idlle but gets louder with higher rpm. Did you give the drew marine shotgun muffler consideration? The march 2005 hotboat has a test of 22 clamp ons that I dug out of my archives last night. Thanks

i installed the ggb thru hulls on my 302 with superchargers, it cut the noise down huge. now it has a awsome tollerable sound.

Trick Marine has them.

I'd like to do the clamp on GGB's but I only have 1" of tailpipe and the info I have says they need 2 1/2 inches. I'm not sure how difficult it will be to install the transom mount. Anyone done it?

Thanks,
Garrett

Rippem put two sets of Corsa's on his 353 last year and they are transom mounts. I have the same Corsa's on my 353 and I think they sound pretty good. I'm looking forward to see how they will sound with my new CMI elbow tops!

Garrett, It is not that difficult to do the transom mount ggb's, I was able to use the same holes of my old tips, Just have to drill all the way thru the transom, The old tips came off fairly easy using a 2x4 and inserting inside the tips from the outside with a up and down and side to side motion to break them free from the transom, You just have to drill out the holes all the way thru the transom from the out side to bolt the new tips on, Spray a little soapy water into the exhaust hose's so the tips slide into them easier.

Thanks for the info! Do I need to seal up the new install with some silicone based sealant on the transom? Or I have some other stuff that is high temp that is a sealant.

Thanks,
Garrett

Re: Muffler Opinions?

Once you dry fit everything and are ready for the final install use 3M 5200 for permanent install. Or you look at their 4200 but it has a longer cure time.

Re: Muffler Opinions?

General use silicone sealant will eventually grow fungus.

I would use a marine sealant, but not 5200. You will never be able to remove anything sealed with 5200 without taking the gelcoat off with it.

Garrett, There is a rubber seal that goes between the muffler and the transom, I used a bead of white lifecock between the rubber gasket and the transom.

This is definitely a rumor going around lately. I talked to Lofty (ONeil performance, don't have the link handy) a couple of days ago. He said that the mufflers are on back order, but he didn't say anything about them being out of business. Doesn't prove it isn't true, but I'd think he would let me know if he can't sell me a GGB and try to sell me something else.

Re: Muffler Opinions?

Here's an update on the quest for a quieter ride. I'ved talked to Lofty a couple of times and GGB simply isn't keeping up with demand but is apparently still in business. He was going to call me back if he got some in, but that was supposed to happen two weeks ago. I've been trying to buy some GGB's transom mounts for over a month now and they just aren't available. It appears that GGB had a big increase in demand this year and just can't keep up and as a result a lot of companies that carried GGB dropped them. Doesn't do any good to advertise something that you can't sell.

So, I've basically given up on getting GGB Extreme transom mounts. Some places still have clamp on mufflers in stock but I can't use clamp on mufflers because the tail pipe is too short.

I'm leaning towards getting the E-series mufflers from Livorsi now. Anyone tried them?

here is my deal.... the silent thunder had to go for a variety of reasons. Open exhaust wouldn't do in the community boathouse or it's a silly reason to get pulled over on the wrong day. ;)

bought a set of new take off Corsa transom mounts (the large ones) from Trout for a great price ($ outlay was an issue on this project 'cause I didn't HAVE to do anything...the Silent Thunder was functionally fine!

these had the pop riveted "ring" (after the baffle stack) removed at Formula. I've had Corsa's before. These sound "just right" from idle to WOT.

The effect of removing the ring is that less water is "held back" in the "can". Thus a little less silencing and therefoer less restictive.

It may be moot on my 425's, but it worked out great and was a pleasing low-buck mod.

If you'd like to put the difference in the gas tank or into other toys for the boat...this is a good plan. :)
