Silent Thunder rattle?
What is up with the rattle of the platform. It acutally vibrates the back seat a little bit. I like the looks and sound of the silent thunder, just not the vibration.
Can this be fixed or cured without removing the silent thunder? |
Re: Silent Thunder rattle?
Chris .. the baffles have been known to come loose ... I dont think you can repair them without taking the box off .... Some have gone in thru the rear outlets and cut a dog house type opening in the baffles ... like upside down "U" ... there are two baffles on each outlet... just a partition in the box ... one from the top ending about 4" from the Bottom and one from the bottom ending 4" from the Top .... the exhaust has to ~ to get out ...mine was broke loose on the Baffle closest to the transom. My Glass guy used a putty to repair it .. worked well ... Since then I have removed the box again and cut out ALL the partition, but have not run it yet. m

Re: Silent Thunder rattle?
What year boat is your silent thunder on? The older ones pre 1990 are more of a pain to repair then the newer ones.

Mine is a 1991. Will the boat sound much different if I remove the baffles?

Yes, It will sound better, I did this on my 272 sr1 and it gave it a nice rumble, you can do asearch on silent thunder and find the thread that tells you how to do it, I did mine by drilling 3 holes in the top 2 corners and the middle top of the baffle, and then used a keyhole saw, to cut across and then down to cut them out, it is easier to get the piece out by cutting it in half to get it back out thru your exhaust opening, Some people have also used a sawzall, but i found it easier with the keyhole saw, mine had a 12" blade. |

Re: Silent Thunder rattle?
I have the 4 drain plugs out and the baffles have 5 holes each cut in them.
SHOULD I PUT THE 4 PLUGS IN THE BOTTOM OF THE PLATFORM BACK IN? |

SHOULD I PUT THE 4 PLUGS IN THE BOTTOM OF THE PLATFORM BACK IN? I would put the plugs back in and remove the rest of the baffles |

With the plugs out and not having any water in there can create quite a bit of heat in the box and create fiberglass problems along with melting the flaps that are on the transom tips. I found on my 272 that i had much better flow with no baffles and removed the flaps on the square openings in the back of the silent thunder box. |
Re: Silent Thunder rattle?
Hey guys,
Learned a hard lesson about the rubber flaps and removing them. My 1987 F206 was the first year with the silent thunder platform. The factory did NOT put on the square flaps on the back of the platform that year. There are actually round rubber baffles on regular transom tips inside the platform but the cannot be seen unless the platform is off the boat. You can also not see if the round rubber flappers break and fall off! In 1988 Formula put the second set of flaps on the back of the platform for a reason. About 6 years in, unbenownst to me, one of the round flappers broke off and apparently exited the platform. One day at the local sand bar someone pushed my boat backwards to get me out of the raft of boats and out into deep water to leave. Instant hydrolock of the engine. Bent two rods, collapsed an exhaust valve into the head, and cracked a piston. The purpose of those square flaps on the back of the platform is to help prevent hydrolock. There is negligible backpressure if any to the exhaust system. I'd leave any flappers ON! Drill bigger holes in the bottom of the platform to relieve backpressure. |
