Supercharge Question
I am looking at purchasing a 1991 24 ft Formula with a 330 Merc Bravo. It also has a supercharger set for 4psi. Can anyone tell me 1) is this a good engine, 2) what long term engine concerns should I be aware of with a supercharged engine?
Thanks in Advance. |
Re: Supercharge Question
330 hp 454s have too many cast and NOT forged parts internally unless they have been changed at some time.
A stock 330 is not a good candidate for supercharging....it's just a matter of time :( |
Re: Supercharge Question
Thanks for the email.
I was told that the engine was gone over and updated "with all the good stuff to keep up with the blower (springs valves etc)." In addition the engine has its own closed circuit glycol cooling system. What type of internal parts would need to be changed? |

Was the work done by a reputable shop? |

Re: Supercharge Question
I know a few people that are running low boost on 330's. They are low compresion so they can handle it to a point. You are limited by engine revs. If the guy rebuilt it I would want to see new pistons. Rods and Crank if he was running boost much over 4-5 pounds. The heads also came in two flavors. Small oval ports are very limited, large oval ports were actually a decent head.
Bvalery: I am assuming you reported this post by accident? Jon |
Re: Supercharge Question
Thank you everyone for your input. It appears that the engine was rebuilt with new Rods Pistrons etc. and with the low 4psis it seems the negine is fast and strong.
PS: the report was by accident, sorry about that! |
