HP500 EFI Oil Temp Question

Hi,

I just installed new XR drives w/ IMCO lowers (built by Mr. Gadgets). My oil temps come up to about 180 when my water temp is around 155 to 160. After running this way for 2 or 3 minutes, my oil temps will drop to about 160 as well and will stay this way until I drop off plane and idle at which time my oil temp will go back up to 180 or so and my water temps will drop a few degrees.

What do you guys see w/ the HP500 EFI oil temps? I'm wondering if I might be moving too much water through the system once the boat is on plane.

Thanks,
Garrett

Sounds like you need thermostats on the coolers ..... bet you up north ?

Nope, Arizona. Water temp was probably 80+ degrees when I tested.

Re: HP500 EFI Oil Temp Question

it needs to be ~ 190* ...you can have condensation issues ... seems the water temp is being regulated with the thermostat ....I would think a oil stat is needed ....I guess you could go to smaller coolers but that would be a step back ......m

Re: HP500 EFI Oil Temp Question

Is this after a hard run or just a nice cruise?
On mine I rarely see the oil temp get over 180*. This always made me wonder if the temp sensor was after the oil cooler.

I think your fine. I wouldn't get excited until the oil temp is over 240 or you have white stuff (moisture) in your breathers (valve covers).

Re: HP500 EFI Oil Temp Question

On extended long runs at or near full throttle, the temp will come up to 190 -200 range. On a really long run it was getting close to 210 at nearly full throttle and I dropped teh speed by 5 mph and it came down a little. Light cruise it will always come down to about the same as water temp. There is never any condensation in the oil. I think I'll call it good for the time being.
