Finally got friends 98 353 in water today, great results!!!

My friend bought his 98 353 last Aug. with a bad engine, boat had hp500's with prochargers,Imco ext boxes and Imco extreme drives, pulled the engines in may this year and finally got it done last night at 2:00 AM,Pulled it out to the lake and put it in today, swett results!!! The engines have 0 hrs on them and we were not supposed to beat on it but could not resist, with 15 minutes on the engines, now 525's with 5 lbs of boost and aluminum heads,we hit a GPS of 96 MPH!!!!!
There is more to be had,the engines are not even tuned totally and there is a 7 lb pulley option for spring next year!!
This felt good after waiting all summer using his 311 that runs 75 on gps,96 is ALOT faster!! and the boat handled great,2-3 ft chops in Sandusky bay today.
The fresh decals on the side must not have dried all the way as it started to peel off!! See pic.

Nice!! what props are you running? drives?
I was liking the 70 mph cruise in my friends 353 at 4000 rpm!
I have to talk about his boat since mine is slow,I ride on his when I want to go fast,I love mine but a Formula is in the future for me.
He did a sweet dash to fit all his gauges, very tight fit!
Any more pics of yours?

As much as I hate to say it, I will probably only be up one or two more times. Buying this house kind of put a hurting on my boating money. The days of care free living are officially over!

I willl be having a party after halloween though! By then everyone should be done boating.

Again, tell J&S that I'm glad it went well. I cant imagine having to see a new boat on land for 15 mos. before getting to use it.

Does life really begin at 100?

I love that paint, I was looking for a 382 with that color scheme.....
Mines an 02 382, Bravo XR's with heavily cupped 34 pitch 4 blade bravos. (boat blows out getting on plane) She still has a little left in her but I didn't want to push it. I'm going to lay into the trottles one more time because this winter the motors come out and the Prochargers are comng off. We're building 540's shooting for 650HP so I'll be down in the mid 80's next summer.
The dash of mine was custom made as well......Think I like "Lake Effect's" better.

That looks like the boat we sold to Mailon Kent in Bham,AL.If so,you are right,it does have more in it. Dano ran it 101 right after the prochargers were installed, and Mailon told me it later saw 105. Awesome boat.

I was waiting for someone to recognize it!!
It was his boat,my friend (Scott) bought it last August and finally got it together, taking it slow so it runs good and reliable, what else do you know about this boat? it has 5 lbs of boost now,was it 7lbs when it went 101 if it did?
The new owner is a very good mechanic,he does all his own work, the boat got a complete new fuel system to make sure it does not melt pistons again(thats how he bought it)
He also found that the heads were in total need a valve work,he reconditioned his ZZ502 aluminum heads from his 311 and used 525 cams.
Does anyone here know what the weak link is on the IMCO Extreme drives?
Magicfloat,can I contact you?
I am sure the owner will chime in here when he is done tinkering with the boat,he stayed at the lake to play for a few days!!

If memory serves,Mailon used the 7# pulleys originally. We did not do the work,we were just the selling dealer,Mailon has bought several Formulas from us. All the service and mods were done by William Slovack,a master technician on Lake Martin, may have his # at the store. This was possibly the fastest Formula we were ever involved with,T500HPS was a close 2nd :p and the InfraRed,one of the prettiest. Enjoy, and call me anytime.205-221-3072. Robert

I would have to say it had the 7 lb pulleys to go past 100 mph,I am sure we would kill to see 105!!!

I appreciate all the positive comments. I'm really happy on the way this boat came together. I still have some bugs to work out, but all is good.

Limited(Tim). The motors had around an hour on them before I pounced on them. I like to think of it as an in water dyno run.

Magicfloat(Robert). I will be contacting you in the near future, I have a couple questions about the boat. If you talk to Mailon, let him know the boat is back in action, and I appreciate all the cool parts he put on the boat.

Looks like I might have to start crying the Bravo blues. Took the boat out on Monday after making a couple carb. and timing adjustments, put on the second set of props that came with the boat, and made a few loops around the bay. I saw a 97mph on the speedo, and was going to go for a cruise on the lake. At around 60mph, the port motor started to free rev, turns out I broke the prop shaft right at the bearing carrier. Talked to Jim at Dubberts, and he said while its not as common as twisting the Bravo shafts, he has seen them break there!!. The drives are early Imco extremes, with welded upper gears, a 1" shorter lower cases and shafts, and the rest are stock Bravo. I did pick up a used shaft and new bearing carrier from him though. Pulling it home tommorrow to fix the drive, decals and a couple other things on the list. If all goes well, I'll bring it back out on Sunday. I'm not ready to give up on this season yet. I would love to have one whole weekend on it before I break out the antifreeze.

Re: Finally got friends 98 353 in water today, great results!!!

Jryan26
I'm running the 800cfm Holley/Merc carbs with some basic upgrades(nitrophyl floats, .140" bottom feed needle/seats,milled choke horn, epoxyed choke rod hole). I also built what I thought was a fuel system with plenty of overkill(Aeromotive A1000 pump, custom 5/8" fuel pickups, #10 s/s braided feed, #8 s/s braided return line dumping back into the 3/8 npt factory tank bungs, 1:1 boost referencing Mallory pressure regulator). The pumps came with the boat(as did the blowers), and talking to Aeromotive I thought the pumps would handle the job. After some research I am realizing the 500 lbs/hr rating these pumps have is only borderline to keeping 750/800hp blown motors happy. A good rule of thumb for BSFC(brake specific fuel consumption) with a blown application is .6(lbs/hr=bsfc x bhp)(.6 x 800=480lbs/hr), which means the A1000 pumps are just big enough. The reason I am typing all this is, if you didnt already buy the fuel system that comes with the Prochargers, dont!. While I love the blowers and all the power, the fuel system that comes with the blowers sucks. I pulled out around 50ft of 1/2" and 3/8" rubber hose, tees, factory Merc fuel filters, fuel coolers and other misc crap. If you want a blower motor to live you need a good fuel system. My boat had blown up the starboard motor twice, and I believe it was part to the fuel system. I talked to PC Carbs(www.performancecarburetors.com) a couple of times, and will be sending him my carbs or buying a set from him this winter because there is mods that need to be done to the metering plates and other circuits to keep everything safe. Time and budget kept me from doing it yet, and I hope I dont regret it. I also opted to go with bonnets instead of the carb boxes that came from Procharger. The bonnets will produce more power, make it easier to tune the carbs, and look a ton better. The only safety concern that arises from the bonnets is the possibility of fuel seapage past the throttle shafts(which wont happen @5lbs of boost), but can be eliminated by having the throttle shafts sealed/o-ringed. There is alot of info I learned putting this boat together, and I'm sure alot more to be learned. If I could help you out, give me a call @ 216-214-2462 or 440-888-0563 Scott

I have been playing it lazy since I winterized it in Nov. Now that the holidays are over, I need to get the carbs sent out, upgrade the fuel pumps, and figure out what Im going to do with the drives. Im sure Ill be posting more the closer it gets to spring.

I ended up buying plain old barry grant 750 blow through carbs. I think they have all of the necessary components for the hat application. 2 of these cost 1100. 1 carb from pc was 900. What jets are you using?

I cant remember the exact size, 98/90's I think, talking to PC, just putting in big jets is not the correct way of doing it. I guess there is some massaging or maybe even replacing of the metering plates that needs to be done. I think they make them annular boosters, and tune the air bleeds as well. I'm going to send them my 800's. They said somewhere around $450 per carb to make them true blow thru, I'm hoping a little less since I already milled the air horns, put in there needle/seats, and nitrophyl floats.

I agree, but I'm not the first to put 750hp thru a bravo, and I know I wont be the last. The boat is pretty light for its size, so I will hope for the best. I'm going to upgrade to XR propshafts this season, and keep my fingers crossed..
