Nose cone for an alpha?
I was talking to a local marine mechanic and he was telling me that I should get a nose cone for my alpha drive which would cut down the drag from the drive by at least 50%. He said that they are normally made for outboards, but that you grind them down to fit and epoxy them on. He said for around $100 you can go wrong. Has anyone done something like this to their drive? With the weight of this thing, I could use all of the help I can get!

Re: Nose cone for an alpha?
I also have been looking into nose cones for my 242. I have heard different things. some say they don't make a difference til 70+ mph. but I guess the ones to talk to would be hydromotive.

Look for an Alpha SS drive.

Re: Nose cone for an alpha?
I put a nose cone on a 60 mph boat years back. I then had a 60 mph boat with a nose cone  .
It did improve handling  . |

It did improve handling  . Had the same deal with a 32 Pachanga w/Alphas years ago, ran 64 no cones, ran 64 with cones. Don't remember that handling was any better, but once you put them on you have the added pain in the a$$ of dealing with paint comming off etc. Looked cool, but that's all they did. Land & Sea versions for what it's worth. |
Re: Nose cone for an alpha?
Powerboat did a test awhile back and the Alpha experienced blowout at around 68mph. A nosecone provides nothing below this speed. The nosecone increases the aspect ratio of the drive. Nosecones do work but you must be going fast enough to need one. I've had the Hydomotive nose cone since 1992 and it does it's job, but I am running over 75mph.

BTW I am adding NCs to my Bravos this winter to get rid of the LWP because they have caused me more grief than their worth. |
