My first Big Boat Project.....

Hey guys,so this is going to be my first big boat project, for me anyways.I'm sure not as big as some of you have done.So here's what i'm going to do as soon as spring comes and we get warmer weather, and I can get my trailer back from Sloman ....Here's the list

1) Paint the lower units of the out drives Satin Silver.
2) Paint Rub Rail White and new SS inserts.
3) Paint cabin hatches white.
4) Uprade the stereo,bigger amps,subs etc...
5) Build a removeable 2ft extension for the vberth.
6) Change the square gauge bezzels to the updated round ones. Also thinking of getting them in black???
7) Non skid tape on the swim platform(yellow).

Here are some pics, also does anyone know what size the stock gauges are so i can order the bezzels in advance. My boats all wrapped up my boat lift. And do you think black would look good???

Sounds fun,,,,, except for the v-berth extension idea. I don't know about that plan. The one in the picure is pretty goofy looking. Plus, you have back rests that will be in the way. I dunno, lets see what ideas you come up with.

ThirdBird 02-10-2007 11:27 AM

By the way pshannon, your boat looks real nice. I like the paint job, fresh and different. Yellow is cool in my book anyday.

They make a clear non skid tape if you cant find yellow-get it at West Marine.

Thanks thats what i'll get then, that way i don't have to worry about matching the color...The vberth could be a little tricky but i'm going to try,I'd like to do some overnighting this season and could use another foot off the end of it to make it comfy,so we'll see.Any other ideas that you guys could think of that could help would be great.

boat looks great, tint those naked windows...dark would look good

mopower 02-10-2007 02:33 PM

I have a cushion to fill in between the couches in my 272 that works real well:cool:

Paint your handholds and cupholder plates and replace the cupholders with some new ones. :D

I'm doing the hatches and rubrail now also. Good luck.

handfulz28 02-10-2007 03:01 PM

Hey Treads, keep me/us posted on your hatch/rubrail process. I know Russ (Formula Outlaw) got a lot of us looking into it, but since you're tackling this now I'd like to hear how it goes for you and exactly which paint & cleaning process you use.
i also want to get some ideas for the plastic vents. I might try the Krylon navy blue on the side vents and stay with white on the forward-facing vents.

Treads 02-10-2007 03:04 PM

I did the forward facing vents in the same white and it turned out great.

pshannon 02-10-2007 03:15 PM

Hey also just to let you guys know when I do the updates,i'll take lots of pics and list how it was done and what i used, and i'll create a DIY(do it yourself) for each one. That wat if anyone else want to do it you can have some sort of guide...

Treads 02-10-2007 03:38 PM

pshannon, when I did the handholds and cupholder plates, being that they are aluminum, I sanded them real well and then used outdrive primer and paint to help prevent any corrosion issues. After 3 or 4 coats of paint, sealed all the parts with a clear coat. The forward vents, since they are plastice, I just used scotch-brite and roughed them up a little and applied an adhesion promoter specifically made for painting plastics. then just paint and clear coat. Going to use the same paints for the hatches also, but the interior or underside of the hatches will be a grey to match the cabin. For the rubrail, unless you are going to replace, the Krylon Fusion series of paint is what may work best.

I'm painting the hatches and at least some of the dash this spring. Also want to put a couple step plates and new vents on. Treads, that looks great. This could be a fun thread. Lot's of pictures everybody.

pshannon,

I think you will have a problem going to round bezels/guages. In the original dash configuration, the lower row of holes are too close together. I had to stagger the layout when I did my 311 dash.

what do you guys think about tint,I have a friend of mine that ownes a tint shop and would do it for free...

The staggered gauges like reddog's look better in my opinion. Here's cutting the bezzels to make them work.

Griz 02-13-2007 12:33 PM

By the way. I like the tint and the A8 wheels.

Treads 02-13-2007 03:27 PM

pshannon, I think the tint looks great!:evilb:

Have to add that to the list now.:p

The V-berth pic is mine and it does look goofy in that pic....it's all I have since I sold the boat. It did work great though and was only in the boat when we were going to be overnighting on it, which meant it was covered with blankets, etc and not visible. (I just used some fabric I already had laying around.)

There is a problem that may not allow it to work on your 272. My berth cushions were taller than the lip that held them in place. If yours are taller as it appears I'm not sure how you could make the extension surface level with the factory berth as I did.

PS: the A/C was very temporary as I installed a Cruisair unit shortly after and the bungee cord was in place to hold all our crap on 3-4 day trips.

pshannon 02-13-2007 08:37 PM

T500hp, what i'm thinking is of doing is making a two piece system that goes under the cushions to raise them up even with the lip, so it goes even with the extension...I can't wait till it gets a little warmer so i can pull the boat out and start the project..........lots of pics to come

t500hps 02-14-2007 07:58 AM

If it works for you, I used 1 inch (maybe 1.5) for the legs of the extension. I mounted flushscrew in type bases on the bottom of the extension and another set on the top of the "feet". This allowed the legs to be completely removed by just unscrewing them. The feet were round cut plywood with an inch or 2 cushioning so they wouldn't hurt the seats.....I latter changed them to longer legs and moved them to run down to the floor.

Your swimplatform looks just like mine, and it already has anti slip finish on it. Doesn't yours?
