Performance Question for a 382
 

Hello Everyone.

So I decided to keep my 382 becasue after I drove other boats I just felt more comfortable in this one.

They only complant that I have with this boat is that it is not as fast as i would like, which is the reason for this thread. I would really like to see an honest 80 mph.

Right now I have a 1998 382 with 502's (415hp) with Stainless marine exhuast and 26p Bravo One's. With this package I an running 68 mph on GPS @ 5000 rpm.

I have recently purchased two long block 502's that I am going to use for a build up of the motors. I also have access to 2" shorties if needed.

What combination of HP/Drives Height/Props would be the best to get me to the 80mph mark and give me the best overall performance? Any help would be great!

So you have 502's....and bought 2 more 502 long blocks???

I'm shipping one of my motors to the dyno today that will end up in my 02 382. You'll need 600HP + to run an honest 80 GPS. With that CI motor you'll need good heads, higher compression, and good exhaust (yours will be OK but not great).

We've converted mine from 500EFI's that had Prochargers. Now their 540, 9.7 compression, ported Iron Eagle heads, with CMI's and the Prochargers are gone. We've also increased the injector size and added monoblade intakes. Should be in the 650HP range. If you hadn't already bought all the internals adding C.I.'s is the easiest way to make HP. Why didn't you just rebuild with what you had?

Becasue I didn't want to loose any boating time. This way I can take my time and build up the other motors while I am still able to use the boat. Then when they are done I can switch them out in a weekend!

Oh yeah...your in FL. Yesterday was the first time it got above 32 degrees for 6 days straight....and it was only 41. We have plenty of time to re-build motors here and I'm not that far North. Good Luck, I'm no builder just passing along what I've seen in mine or other boats. You'll probably be running a 28 pitch 4 blade at 550-600 hp (slight chance you'll need a 30)

What are you running for drives? Are they standard length? On Boxes?

Does anyone have experience of running 2" Shorties on a 382 with no boxes? What were the results?

regular length bravo XR's, NO boxes. Never heard of anyone running shorties.....not sure a "pig" like the 382 would workwell with them.

My 382 with 575 SCI's, boxes, XR drives, Sportmaster lowers, high X dimensions and spinning Hydromotive, non-labbed, P-5's with a light load in a 2' to 3' chop, I'm lucky to see 80 mph. I believe you'll need to push +600 h.p. in order to run in the low 80's regardless of the load.

Agree with others comments ... you will need at least 600 HP to crack 80. I'm seeing 84 mph with 645 HP and Max Machine upgraded XR drives, extention boxes, nose cones, and props turning in. The drives will be the weak link with this kind of power in a 382. Have heard that the 382 does not respond well to changes in drive height. Pretty well dialed in from the factory in that regard.

Your 502's will work fine for the goal's that you stated.
I have a 382 with 502's that make 620 reliable and very drivable HP that will push the boat to a honest gps speed of 83 mph.
You will need good heads but you do not need alot of compression, 9.2:1 will work well and with 89 octane.
I am running Bravo one's with "X" gears and a billet top cap I designed and built myself, no drive failures yet.
My boat does not have boxes and spins 28" bravo's 5500-5600 rpm with a 50 mph cruise at 3500 rpm.
If you want a tested a proven combo call rmbuilder and don't make the mistake of running big cams and junk heads.
