292 Fastech 350 mag vs 6.2L
How much difference is there in performance with these two motors? Only 20 hp but whats the difference in torque? Any speed difference? What about gas consumption?
|
We run into lots of variation in speeds on all 292's regardless of engines, but generally, maybe 5 mph, sometimes more, sometimes less. Not much difference in planing(both are a little sluggish,a little difference in midrange but not much.fuel economy not big difference. Since I believe you are looking for used,if you find a nice boat at a price you like, don't let the 350/6.2 be that big a factor, condition and price are more important. Just my 2 cents.
|
So what are the 350 boats running, about 66-67 mph? Thanks Robert.
|
I would say, or at least I hope, you'll see a little more in resale value with the 6.2's. Probably nothing earth shattering though

App. 5 MPH is more than I expected. I have heard app. 2 MPH difference between the 350/6.2. I guess they use the same size prop ? Bravo One 28" ? I have heard around 68-70 MPH with the 350's, and 70-72 MPH with the 6.2's. Is that not correct ? I run Scorpion engines with Bravo One 28" props and it is very easy to get the 292 on plane. Don't have to use tabs at all. Just keep the drives trimmed in. But my boat is bottom painted so my top speed is suffering because of that. Funny thing is I don't know what my top speed is because I have no GPS installed yet. Only the happy speedo. |
Yeah I was expecting around a 2 mph difference too.
|
Formula says 3 mph and in many cases that is about right. We have seen 350's vary from 65-68,but occasionally get a 64,6.2's we see 70-71 . For some reason the 6.2's are more consistent,350's seem to vary more, don't know the reason. I keep wanting to take the time to do more prop testing,I think prop selection is holding the 292 back a bit,but it's tough to find the time. I really believe Maximas are the ticket, but Merc doesn't agree. At some point I will test them, but for now the 292 is neat boat with either engine, only comments I get is that it needs a little more acceleration.
|
I was kind of thinking the same thing on the props. Seems like I read a few posts were guys were getting pretty high slip #'s with the Bravo Ones. Be interesting to see what a 5 blade would do.
|
I would be very interested to hear what you find if you do get time to do some prop testing.
I am also wondering about Hydromotive props whether they would be better on the 292. |
One thing we have found thru testing is that stock Bravo 1's work much better than labbed props on some boats. The slip is much greater,on labs,on 292 and 271. Lab props have their place of course, but they are overrated, and even a negative,on certain boats.
|
My 292 is a 2002 model and came with non-labbed props from the factory as I know.
When did Formula start using labbed props as standard on the 292 ? I suddenly remember that the previous owner of my boat told me that he was running 69 MPH GPS with 350 Mags before he bottom painted the boat. And that was with the standard 28" Bravo Ones (non-labbed). The 350 Mags had Stainless Marine exhaust and silent choice but I am not sure if that would make a difference. |
My 02 292 with 350mags that I traded in to Magicfloat would run an honest 70 on gps on a perfect day, 68 consistantly, with 2 people and half tank of fuel, 1.65 drives and bravo 28 pitch props(non labbed)ooooh and just for Cuda's sake,,,,a bimini..lol
Roberts right on about lack of consistantcy,,,10 different boats all set up identically will all run differently as far as speed/handling . |
Are there any aftermarket headers that can be installed on either engine to improve performance similar to the CMI's for 496's?
|
Anybody that has achieved better speeds with different props on the 292 Fastechs ?

i am installing a stainless marine exhaust on the boat. does anybody know what kind of power i am going to pick up. also does anybody do an ecm recalibration of tese engines
|
I saw 72 mph (GPS) recently after S/T removal, up from a best of 71.
Stock 6.2s, 28p Bravo non-labbed props, 2 people, 1/2 tank of gas, full water tank. Sea level, 1-ft chop, 68 degrees, low humidity...IMO about as perfect as conditions get for a speed run in stepped V-hull. I agree with the statement that either engine package will be great, as the 292 is just a fun boat. Better to get a great deal on a super clean 350 Mag package and tweak the engines for more speed than buy a thrashed 292 w/6.2s and have to deal with cosmetics, interior flaws, etc. |
I have a 2006 292 with 6.2's, 28 labbed Bravos, 1.65 gear. Bought the boat from Robert. Dinged the left hand prop on a log over the summer, enough to take it to Mazco Props to be repaired. Basically lost 1.5-2.0 mph after that prop was worked on (was 71mph, now more like 69). Both props are at Mercury and I am looking to get that mph back and tweak a little more rpm since I currently top out at 5000 rpm.
You guys may be interested... In late October I took the boat out solo in cool weather, 3/4 tank fuel, pen and paper in-hand, and recorded rpm and mph (SC5000 SmartCraft) at various rpm levels to calculate prop slip. Here they are: 3400 rpm 42 mph 23% slip 3800 rpm 50 mph 18% slip 4200 rpm 57 mph 16% slip 4600 rpm 63 mph 15% slip 5000 rpm 69 mph 14% slip Anyways... I got major plans for upgrades in a few years. Right now she is at Competition Marine Center having 280S K-Planes installed...:evilb: |
If I switc my 28labbed props for 26's will i pick up top end
|
We have seen an occasional increase going from lab 28's to stock 26's on some 292's. Not written in stone and not in every case, but we do see it.Seems that slip is less with stock props on the 271 and 292 for some reason.Probrably cause the boats are so heavy. Lab props work better on lighter, faster boats.

which is exhaust sysytem is going to give me better resulys on my 292 with 6.2'. Is ite Imco or te stainless marine. Both have provisions for the corsa exhaust. i would get CMi's but then I would have to get new exhaust diverters. Also what gains can I expect by getting the ecms recalbrated::

I'm very interested in hearing opinions on this as well - Exhaust upgrade (likely IMCO powerflows) is my next planned mod and I'm wondering about recalibration post-exhuast install. Is it worth it for the 2007 season, or should I wait until 2008 when I'm planning on supercharging? |

If so, we should hook up sometime and compare notes |
Will do guys! Talked to CMC yesterday. They got the tabs and pumps mounted. Have to do some glass work where the Bennett rams were mounted and the mechanical indicator feed through. Sounds like I will be picking it up next week. Will start another thread and post pics (didn't mean to hijack this one...)
Most of our boating is on the Mississippi River. Keep it on a lift at Lake Center Marina. We are spending a week on Table Rock Lake this summer. Last year towed it to Lake Erie. Big water and a lot of fun and one of the reasons the K-Planes are being installed!:drink: |

I know who you are now. The Washington MO thing was throwing me off, but I remember seeing your boat several times last year on the river. We run the river as well. Our 292 has the teal, orange, and blue sanibel graphic. If I was not such a cheapskate, I'd be able to post a pic......I tried to catch you at Cedar Hill one time last year, but you guys were already pulling out. See ya on the river this summer!
