311 tie bar length?

Just scored an Imco tie bar 32.5 inches. When I measured my drives, I got 34 3/8 so I didn't want to get the 34.5". There's at least 1.5" of adj on each side so I should be good right?
Any input on how I should set up the drive alignment? I've read so much on toe in vs toe out, and some define toe differently, I'm confused. In the auto world, "toe" refers to the forward-most part, so "toe in" would mean drives pointing in / \ "Toe out" would be opposite \ /
Although, I've got probably 1/8" of play/wear in my port steering arm...

Michael,

I've tended to set mine dead even. Center of the leading edges of the drives same as the trailing edge of the drives or centerline of the prop shaft.

Thanks guys. I guess my 34 3/8 measurement is off because of my loose steering shaft. But I'm glad I got the 32.5 so I have room for adjustment.
Looks simple enough to install, but anything I should look out for? I need to support the drives because I'll be removing the trim cyls right? Anything I should do while I've got this stuff apart?

I have mine dead even, too - but I'm not looking for that last MPH so who knows how much difference it makes. When I installed it I had the drives all the way down, didn't think to support them, had no problems.

I think dead-on is the way to go also. There was a pretty long thread over in the Tech Section a year or two back about this. More opinions than facts. Guys were talking like an eighth total out or in,,,,,,,,, hogwash!!! Line 'em up straight and run it. You'll never know the difference.
