400 SS with Diesel's
I drove a 400SS with Diesel power this past Saturday and was quite surprised with the set up of it and how well it ran.
I was thinking about one with 500 or 525 but I like the concept of a Diesel power boat with better fuel econ and not having to rebuild the power so soon. I was at Glencove and delt with Steve (selpel on here) and drove the one they have, but I'm not a fan of the hard top. Does anyone out there own a Diesel 400 and what shoould I look at? Did not think I would go from 80 mph to the mid 50's but it is a great all around boat. By the way the ride was great in LOTO on a Saturday afternoon. Rich. |
I heard a little about your ride. Steve is a great guy to work with.

Man, I sure miss Ron Thompson, he was a good guy

We have a pre-owned 2005 with twin Volvo 350 HP D-6 diesels, fully loaded; also a 2001 with Yanmar diesels and Bravo-III drives. Further info on our website at www.totalmarine.com.
Diesel power is the ONLY way to go with this boat: 40 MPH cruise at 30 GPH! Not bad when you consider $3.50 plus per gallon! Tom Total Marine |

Actually, it is about 26 or 27 GPH at 40 MPH! You are going to see a dramatic increase in diesel offerings in the next year or so. The new diesel technology is so good, with performance very near that of standard gasoline power, plus longer engine life, better resale, better economy, etc., etc., etc.
We basically exclusively sell European boats now (Fairline, Jeanneau, Sessa, etc.) and their technology is SO much better. They are way ahead of the curve on diesel power. Tom Total Marine |
You cannot miss him more than me. I was a friend of Ron`s for 20 years and miss him everyday.
It was great to meet Rich and his wife and stangjeeper and his lovely wife this last weekend. Rich, I have some numbers for you and will call you thursday. I may be on the trail of a used 2005 400SS w/diesels and very low hours. He is wanting a 48 Yacht. If you are at the lake this friday stop by Frankie&Louies and I buy you a drink. FORMULA FRIDAY NIGHT@ 5/25/2007 4 to 8 come out and see us! |

I beleieve the comment about a mid 50`s diesel boat were taken out of context. Correct me if I am wrong Rich.
I think what he meant was to go from his 80 mph boat to a 50 mph boat such as the 400 SS with 500`s or 525`s. What Rich enjoyed about the diesel boat was the cruise speed of 35-38 mph and the fuel saved over a gas boat trying to run at that speed. Am I correct Rich? The best speed I have seen on a Diesel 400SS w/fuel has been 48.4 mph on a gps. but it loves to run a 35-38 mph! |
Steve (selpel) you are correct what I meant was if I go to a 400 at all for the speed thing, 48.4 that's 50 mph isn't it:D . He is correct the cruise speed was great.
I won't be down this week but thanks for the offering. I will be hit and miss on Thursday so just call and when I get your message I will call you back. A used boat is just FINE by me I like the idea of a arch over a top as you know.:D Trips2win, Your dad isnt ready to trade yet, is he? I'm very sure that boat is CLEAN. Talk to you soon. Rich. |
not any time soon im just starting to enjoy cleaning his boat after i use it its got a lot of room in the freezer for my drink ice.

Everybody has there likes and dislikes, I like my 525's right now.
|
sweet ray i really like your set up how fast are you cruiseing at 3800 to 4000
|
I knew someone would ask me that, I cannot say right now as the boat came from lake tahoe and has 25P props on it. It is at the dealer right now to change the props to 27's and fix a few warranty issues. I will have it on Friday. So far though with the 25's I am crusing at 40MPH at 4,000 RPM. Rev limiter goes off at 55MPH I would like to cruise at 40 at 3500 but we will see. I will still have the full canvas up this weekend as it looks like it will be cold and rain....
I am reall impressed with the handling, though a bit more sluggish than my old fountain it really does carve a nice turn. It still gives me that performance feel. |
thats what we cruise at with 26s except you are heavier with top, plus your way up there above sea level nice ride.
|
I would like to see twin 700 `s in a 400 SS
How fast is a 400 Ss with twin 600 ? the perfect Diesel package . Twin Yanmar 480 `s with NXT or KONRAD drives |
I have the 27" props on it now and they are just about perfect. I am running 40MPH @ 3800 RPM and tops out at 61.8. It hits 58 - 59 easy but the last couple of mph take a while getting the trim just right. this is with 1/2 tank of fuel full eisen glass up and 4 people on board. It 's running arround 5200 RPM and just touching the limiter warning.

On work Computer right now I will post a picture of us tonight from this past weekend.... 3- 400SS rafted up for the weekend on the bulkhead in St. Michaels Md..... I have a gas 400 (502's)and both of my buddies have Diesels, 2002 w/ Yanmars and a 2005 with Volvo's...... Coming out of a 36 Concept with a Porta Potty last year to the 400SS this year, I dont mind the 10 MPH loss, the AMMENTIES way over compensate....

My wife and kid and I looked at the Glencove 400ss this weekend. Steve was telling us about your sea-trial, and how impressed you were with the boat. I am thinking possibly of a used 400with 500's. I haven't driven one, but everyone that has seems to rave about them. I would love to be in another pure go-fast, but the wifey says no.
Steve, it was nice talking with you a bit monday morning. Corey |
