1995 Sr-271 Indy
New To Power Boating And The Forum. Looking At A 1995 Sr-271 Indy Edition. Powereed By A 502. Anything In Particular I Should Look For And Any Feedback On Pro's And Con's Would Be Appreciated.
Thanks In Advance. |
The '95 Indy is just like every other 1992 thru 1996 271SR1 with only a few exceptions. It was the only 271 to date that had K-Planes from the factory. Unfortunately they are the long discontinued 110S model. If the trim tabs don't work parts may be an issue. The sunpad oval w/ the wheel and wings logo is a really intricate piece of upholstery that if you step on often you run the risk of spliting its seams, so look at its condition. McCleod will be happy to make a new one. For $1500.00 or so. All of the decals that are unique (port dash, intake manifold, midship above the rubrail, etc) are unobtainium. The engine components that are most visible were painted either green, purple, or maroon same as the colors on the outside of the boat. All of the engine's H2O hoses were covered in decorative braided stainless. Whatever parts that have been replaced (alternator, manifolds/risers/elbows, ps pump, sea pump, brackets, etc) will come out of a Mercruiser box painted black or not at all.
The '95 Indy model had every option included except the docking lights, bimini, or full enclosure. And all of them had the painted up 502mpi. Drive ratio could be 1.50 or 1.65. The two other years of Indy models ('96,'97) it was the graphics only in '96 and red gel plus graphics in '97, no options included that you didn't order, and pick your power that was painted black. Formula says they made 20 in 1995. I think there were far fewer made for '96 and '97. The SR1 hull still had a good bit of wood used in their construction, so a survey would be a good idea. The legroom on the portside is a bit tight for tall people and don't plan on overnighting unless you are a midget. |
Re
Thanks For The Info. Any Idea Of The Areas To Look For Wood Rot?
|
The only place I'd be concerned would be the engine compartment/transom area and that is only if lots of water was left in the bilge for extended periods of time. The front bulkhead just ahead of the bilge pump and the area around the drain plug is where I'd focus. Also, the two L brackets that support the silent thunder are through bolted through the transom. They are sealed by o-rings between the bracket and transom. Even though it is above the water line, I would make sure the o-rings are intact. If the boat has been well taken care of (not sunk or left in the rain for years with the plug in) it should last forever.
|
They were pretty neat boats.I wouldn't worry about the sunpad vinyl,Formula stuff lasts a long time, and a good upholstery shop might get fairly close to the design.Same on the special decals. Todays computerized graphics guys can duplicate almost anything. We sold 2 of that particular model. Not exactly collectible, but close, doubt 20 were built.

and if your lucky it might be the one that Arie Lyundeck was given for winning the Indy 500.
|
There is another one for sale here in Toledo at Brenner/Pier 75 Marine. Talk to Dave White or Don Smith

My memory is a little fuzzy here (been a long time) but I believe I bought that boat. Seems that he had sponsorship ties with Ford and he needed Ford power, and Formula decided it would be easier to just build him another boat and let Arie supply the engine for the replacement,so I bought the one he won. Maybe someone with a better memory than I can add details.

I didn't buy a red one. I think the 95 and 96 were both given to the 500 winner, maybe one of those drivers had the Ford connection. I can't remember what I had for dinner last night,so it's hard to remember boats I bought 10 years ago, even tho I try:D

I'll include a pic of a '95 and a '96 since the pic of the '97 helped eliminate that one. |
Pretty sure it was the 95 boat, now that I think about it.Seems like Formula built a blank boat for the race team to install one of their engines. That might explain why it sat for a while. Someone out there knows the story.

There was a 95 Indy boat for sale over in Tampa about 3 years ago that I looked at,,,it was pretty rough and the dealer that had it for sale wanted premo money for it, the only thing Indy left on the boat was the graphics.

Gotta bump this thread back up because I just bought a 95 Formula 271 Indy. Almost everything is original and in really good shape considering its age. I can put up some better pictures when I get it home and shined up. Only thing it needs IMO is a nice stereo, upgrade the look of the dash, and some personal touches. http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l2...ps8acd7ea5.jpg

Neat boat!

Is the 502 painted purple?
|
Yep, just needs to be touched up. Box full of matching paint comes with it.
|
I test drove a '95 271 Indy in 2002 at LOTO. Glen Cove had the boat. Had been owned by a guy in IL. who traded it in. Where did this boat come from?
|
Guy I bought it from, I think bought it from glen cove. He alternated driving it at LOTO and alton pool on the miss. He lives just north of st. Louis.
|
Good possibility it is the same boat!
|
Congrats... Which one of the series is it??

Hello there... new to the forum. Just wanted to say that I just purchased number 16 of 20! 95 271sr1. I am new to this type of boat, I just sold my Seadoo jet boat. May I ask what you paid for yours; or if you know what the other 18 are going for? Mine has 300 hrs and is in amazing shape! It is all original that was a one owner boat, garage kept, and only fresh water driven. I am the second owner and I found it at an estate sale. The manager of the property had to get rid of it and the dealer just moved it right thru the lot. Not too sure what the indy goes for because there is no option for that on the NADA... also what was all different from the normal 271? Any other advice would be great on the boat! ;) Ill post pics if you guys are interested! ;)

Looks really nice, has the 502, painted all black, I thought that the indy's had colored paint on the engines. |
