A few more shots. Man they look great!
|
That last shot is the bracket for the oil filter. He had to make about eight different brackets for everything. Tons of time and hard work. Really looks nice. Have I said that before?
|
Can't wait to know how it runs! Great work.
|
looks badass!
|
Nick, everything looks great. Hey, I'm heading out to Vegas this weekend, why don't you push that test date up a couple of weeks and I'll meet you over at Mead !!!:D
|
I'd love to man but I'm flying to Miami for the boat show! I'm going to desert storm in April though, why don't you tow your bad boy out and check it out then?
-Nick |
At the present rate, the snow around here won't be melted until June, and they are predicting another big storm for Sunday. I think its time to move to a warmer climate. Have fun in Miami. :D
|
Looks great!! Can you say 'sleeper'? Man, that 292 is going to ruin the day of a lot of traditional go-fast runners... I just hope it handles the speed well. Nick, if you don't already, I highly recommend upgrading to the 280S K-Planes. I did and it made a world of difference in high speed handling in the rough, if you consider 70mph 'high speed'!
|
I'm in total agreement. I still have the bennets but k's are next on the list and what a list that is. Like most things the list on boat stuff is limitless!
The over 70mph speeds is definately a concern. I've experienced the chine walk a few times and it's not a fun sensation. I'm hoping when I get in the 70mph I lower the tabs a tad, calm the thing down and put the tabs up in the upper 70's but who know's? There aren't too many folks out there that have taken the 292 where I'm hoping to take it. |
I sure don't know of any 292's with that kind of power! I'm convinced that the hull is capable of much higher speeds than 70mph as long as everything is right. Bottom blueprinting may be in order with the speeds you will likely reach. I see from the pictures you have hydraulic steering. Did you have that before the engine swap? If not, you will love it! I bought mine with Latham steering from the factory.
One thing with hydraulic steering is to make sure that it is properly bled (no air in the lines). My old boat (twin outboard tunnel) got air in the lines and it made it a handful to drive. If you grab the tie bar and shake side to side, you should not see the cylinder move in and out more than 1/16 inch (should be very solid!). I assume you are running the props turning out, starboard clockwise looking from the rear. I would make sure the outdrives are running dead straight by measuring the distance between the center of each prop shaft and comparing that measurement with the distance between each nose tip. They should be equal. The props will force the outdrives a tad toe-in when under power, which is ideal. Hell, you may know all this stuff already, I just want to make sure! Again, good luck and be safe!!:cool-smiley-011: |
Are you kiddin me? I'm just a used car salesman man. I have no idea about this stuff. I'll definately check those mearsurements out. The sea ray had imco steering and the formula had latham so we had to make some mods with the latham. If we'd kept the imco we would have had to cut new holes ect so we made mods to the latham.

LOL!:D Keep us updated and come on spring!!
|
Well we saw 93.5 on the gps before realizing we were at 17 pounds of boost which is scarey to say the least. These motors were dialed in for high altitude. We're talking 4 to 5000 feet so 10 psi turned into 17psi at sealevel. We need to change pullies and test again in a few weeks. It's also clear the 28 pitch are way too small. I found some labbed 32's for $600 so that's what I'm thinking will work.
|
I am so impressed with what you have done so far. Finally someone is putting real horsepower into a hull I always thought could handle it,but no one tried it.I know you will keep us informed, and thanks.

Nice speed :D
How was the handling at that speed ? |

What were the water conditions and how did it handle at those speeds? Any problems with chine walk? I bet the acceleration is wild. What was the top rpm? Maybe the 28s won't be so small at 10 psi boost. Were you running high octane fuel at 17 psi boost??:party-smiley-004: 93.5 mph... Awesome!!:cool-smiley-011: |
Sorry guys. I went to the nascar races today. That was cool!
Anyhow, the test was kind of ridiculous. The computers were programmed by Arizona Speed and Marine at about 6000 ft altitude. So 10 pounds of boost up there became 17 at 1000 ft. One of the motors idled at 2500 rpm's, the throttles wer'nt in sync, our laptops battery took a dump, our inverter for the laptop wouldn't work, there was a wind advisory right about when we were supposed to test........It just didn't go the way we had hoped at all. We decided to bag it when we saw the psi. All I can say is this: These motors have some incredible potentail. We're talking over 100 when things get dialed in. The boat handled sooooooooo well! Just a hint of chine around 80 mph. I agree with magic float. This boat was made for this stuff. I'm going to try like mad to get my sh** together and really dial this thing in in a couple of weeks. Fun stuff! |
Can't tell you how glad I am to hear how well it handles those speeds. It's nice to know the potential!:evilb:
Thanks again and we look forward to future updates once you get everything dialed in! It would be great if you can get one of your buddies to snap a picture of that bad-boy running at speed. Would love to see the hull attitude approaching 100 mph!:D Probably looks like it is sitting on cement rather than deep in the water like my slow poke...:o |
We need video?
|
VIDEOOOOOOOOOO :boat:
|
I'm on it. We'll have video of the boat going by, vids of the gps hopefully showing over 100mph and vids of my big old grin!
I need some 32's. R&R props in Henderson NV has some 32 labbed props for $600. Not a bad deal. |
Nick, any updates? We're all waiting patiently. :D
|
Nick - awesome project. Give us an idea of the time to plane with the new power package. Hole-shot has always been the complaint that I hear most often when I talk to 292 owners. I am patiently biding my time to get out of my '01 260SS and into a performance hull. I was leaning towards a 312, but I may be back looking at the 292 based on what you have done.
Thanks for sharing. Ralph |
You know guys, I went back to the lake and just could not get the motors dialed in. Once we had the air/fuel right, the exhaust temp would skyrocket. So I'm going to meet an expert at mead next Thurs April 10th. He's tuned countless supercharged motors with the mephi computers so we're going to get him involved. We did see over 90mph running 32's though! -Nick
|
Well it looks like we finaly have things dialed in. We met a tuner from Fresno CA at Lk Mead Thurday and spent two days getting these motors up to par. We had a very hard time controlling the egt's. The only way to get them down was to throw fuel in there which of coarse causes a slew of new problems. In the end we decided to keep the air/fuel ratio at a reasonable level and live with the slightly unreasonable egt's.
So we saw 93mph @ 5600 rpm's running 32 pitch props with 3 adluts and 2 kids on board and about half a tank. Not too shabby! I didn't want to spend too much time at WOT because the egt's were @ 1626 which isn't the safest but livable as long as I don't stay there long. I think 30's would be the ticket. I'm going to keep an eye out for some. The boat was pretty squirelly at those speeds. There was some moderate chop and the boat danced quite a bit. I still have the Bennets. I'm sure bigger tabs will help. I also just need to spend some time with the boat at those speeds, mess with the trim and tabs to see what works best. But man what a RUSH! I'm so happy and relieved to have it running well after all this work! I hop to see some of you at the Desert Storm Poker Run. I'm going to be doing the shootout on Saturday and of coarse the run on Friday. Let me know if any of you are going. -Nick |
Great to hear you got things worked out!:D K-Planes will definitely settle her down. I know from experience! As for the EGT's, I ran them on some outboards (2-stroke application) and believe that their accuracy can sometimes be in question. I recall depending on ignition timing and the location of the EGT's, the combustion flame can sometimes reach them causing a very high reading which isn't a lean condition at all. Just a thought...
Also, if you haven't already, I recommend doing it the old fashioned way and read a couple spark plugs after a good, hard run. I found this link which explains the art of plug reading pretty good. Also helps you dial in the best heat range plug for the application. http://members.uia.net/pkelley2/sparkplugreading.html Of course I have a few questions!:p Are your props 4-blades and, if so, have you considered 5-blades? From the numbers you are looking at around 18% slip. Are your outdrives standard length or a bit shorter? So when you say squirelly do you mean chine walk? Does it feel like it is starting to air out quite a bit more compared to running 70mph or does it still run pretty flat? Props can have a big effect on handling and you may want to consider bottom blue printing. Not that I want to spend anymore of your money:p, but have you considered extension boxes? Anyways... Congratulations on having probably the fastest 292 anywhere!!:evilb: |
We were worried we weren't getting accurate reading from our pyrometers so we hooked up a different egt sensor, a very expensive one called an omega and sure enouph the prometers were way off and they only read up to 1600 degrees.
As far as extension boxes, 5 blade props ect, I'll patiently wait for your check to arrive in the mail and go right out and purchase these items! (Just Kidding). The drives are standard imco extreme advantage drives. They do hang pretty low on the boat so that may be an issue. The next purchase is k style type trim tabs. If it's half as good as everyone on this website says they are I'm sure it will make a dramatic difference. When I say dance I'm talking about chin walking. It didn't do it the last time I tested but the water was calm and there weren't as many people to mess with the weight distribution. Tons of variables!!!! Hard to pinpoint what's doing what without experience. That's what the summers all about! -Nick |
Thanks Nick. Enjoy the summer and good luck at the Desert Storm Poker Run. Keep us posted. Your 292 is going to suprise a lot of people! :ernaehrung004:
Dave |
Congrats, Nick. Enjoy the boat, now all you need to do is come up with an appropriate name for it.
|
any video yet? hows it running?
|
Sorry I haven't updated you guys. I've been working twice as hard and making half as much lately.
I went to the Desert Storm poker run and did their shootout. It was kind of a joke and they only clocked me at 84mph because of the rough conditions but man it was fun. The boat ran great! Saw a consistant 90 plus mph. I haven't been on it since. We're going out next weekend. I'll try to get some shots and video for you guys. -Nick |
Very nice write up and project Nick. I am looking at purchasing a 292 in my neck of the woods that has the 6.2L motors with prochargers on them. Won't be putting out your numbers, but cannot wait to get that rush.
Jon |
Nick, haven't heard from you in a while, any updates ? Video ?
|
Good threat, would like to see some pictures and videos like FRMULTR said.
|
If any of you guys are interested in two complete procharger kits .....I bought a 292 with them installed on the 6.2's, spinning 32" labbed props @5500, 86mph on GPS. PM me if you want to wake that 292 up
