311 exhaust
Looking to replace my stock exhaust. Who knows what/which brands fit a 311, 454 mags, and allow the stock hatch actuator to remain? Also, need to assure they'll mate up to my stock tips at the transom.
|
Dave,
FWIW, I put the EMI Thunder on the 292, no problems with the hatch actuator or getting them tied into the stock ports at the transom. :D |
Thanks Tim.
|
Tim, any real "seat of the pants" increase in performance?
|
For the 292 and 502's, I noticed the difference in both getting on plane as well as going from say 3200 up to 4000 or 4200, or pushing them all the way to 5200. :cool-smiley-027:
Thinking of putting new exhaust on the 311 for the season? |

Thinking of putting new exhaust on the 311 for the season? Gonna do a few things to the 311 to keep my interest up. |
How about Revolution Marine exhaust? Any good? Price is nice.

Yup revolutions seem to be a good deal. The one that came on my 311 are Kodiaks. Rex marine still sells them and they are a decent deal. The risers are Imco. Right now they are out getting polished. Here is a pic when i took them off last fall |

Yeah, change of plan - the cruiser idea is out for now. Deal didn't go on the one I was interested in. Don't want to spend 85k plus on a different one. Just going to run our 311 for at least another season. Not like a I don't like the 311, if I can't "steal" a cruiser, I'll stick with the old bird.
Gonna do a few things to the 311 to keep my interest up. I'd even get it up to the lake for ya, good excuse to come as well. |

Gonna do a few things to the 311 to keep my interest up. Well I tried, we can wait a while, it's still early and with some time she may change her thinking. I'll just keep track of it and where things are going. Meanwhile, if you're looking to perk the old bird up some you could contact Pimp Daddy Racing, and get you some of them Whipple Chargers. :D |

Thats cool Pete. Like you said, it's her boat. If she comes down sometime we'll see what happens. Thanks for your help. |

"We've been working with Eddie Marine and have recently combined our systems. It's the same manifold design, the main change is that now you don't need any other brackets to go with the kit (ie: ign/ecu & o il header, shift interrupt). It's ready to bolt on and go." My guess at this point is that Revolution is shipping this: http://www.eddiemarine.com/store/car...l&p=13074&c=63 |
So, Revolution and Eddie are now one in the same?
|
Bird,
Try this www.douglasmarinesupply.com, have an ad in the classified section under "engines". Have EMI and Gil, advert says best prices bla bla. The EMI Thunders are supposed to be a good set up, much like the Gils, but less money. CMI did make a system they called Uni-Tops, a headder system at a fairly reasonable price. This Douglas Marine is right here in N.Y. |
My 311 has Stainless Marine and they do everything you're looking for. I have one set off right now and they look perfect, thay have something like 350 hours and about 10 years on them.

So I don't know who is doing the castings, but I figure the Revs were a copy of EMIs anyways. Don't recall which drives you have, but with my Bravos my exhuast has a 3" spacer between the manifold and riser. I made the mistake of getting a good deal on two full exhaust setups, but didn't realize I needed spacers. If you're looking for a simple-ish and inexpensive change, consider the OEM 496 manifolds and risers. Mercruiser does make some manifolds in cast iron, so you need to make sure you ask for/get the aluminum manifolds. But otherwise they're a direct bolt on. The risers are tubular and stainless steel so a paint stripping and polishing should make them real pretty. Teague has a few sets and they get $325 per engine set; pretty darn cheap for aluminum/stainless setup in my opinion. |

Are they a "performance" manifold? Probably not so much if stock Merc stuff, right? |
I don't think they'd be considered "performance", but I have to believe that the nice riser design, plus a little internal work on the manifold (see some old Raylar posts) can only be an improvement over the originals.
I think the biggest difference between stock Merc and these aftermarket "value" manifolds are how much individual runner is cast inside. I've never seen what the newer Merc 496 manifolds look like inside to see whether they have a bit of runner cast in there. |

Thanks for the input Ted. Looking for major weight savings over stock, are the Stainless Marine much lighter than stock? I boat in fresh water so aluminum is my goal.

Dave .... just make sure what ever you get that the alignment is right for where the pipes exit the transom. I am not sure if they are standard "Bravo" dimentions.. I had to have some "wedges" made to change the angle of the risers to hit the holes ...But my Gils were originally setup for TRS drives ...The manifolds are gils and pipes are Stainless marine....m

Oh hell yeah! The Stainless is a cast aluminum body with a stainless tailpiece. They come apart easily and weigh about 10 lbs for the body and 6-8 for the tailpiece. I actually enjoy taking them off (heads off one right now-not related to the manifolds). I would NEVER go back to iron manifolds after these things. I don't know how they compare to headers for power but for ease and longevity these things are great. I do know that Tyler Crockett uses them for his 502 upgrade, so he knows they can make some power.

[QUOTE=ThirdBird;2503324]Not yet, working the outage here at the atom splitter. 13 to 14 hours per day leaves no time for anything. Should be done by early April, then I'll get the boat out and get ready.

OK, so I'm almost done working 24 hours per day, I need to get going on the exhaust swap. Does anyone know how high the stock risers are, 3" or 4"? And, do any exhausts come with straight 90 degree risers to acommodate the Formula tip locations? I'd rather not get into fabricating wedges to align the risers with the tips.
Dave |
My Stainless have no wedges or anything, the tailpieces push into flex hose about 8" long and straight into the stock tips.

Dave I don't think I've ever read a negative comment about Stainless Marine. Other than the 3" spacer there is nothing irregular about our exhaust. SM should be a bolt on deal. |
i need one or a set of gil exhaust one has a crack and i have had it fixed two times now i dont tust it i would like stainless im saveing up for a set can any one help me [email protected] randy
