1986 Formula Tach. Reading slow...
Hello all....I have a 86F3LS and need to get either a new "stock" tach or get mine repared. Ive
been told by Daryl at formula that it is made by Medallion. They are out of business being bought out by Borg-Warner I think....It seems to read fine at idle but as the RPM's increase it reads slow. at 4900Rpm's it is only reading about45-4600. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks "Bad-Habit" 86F3LS |
F3LS, Is that a 3 3/4" black gauge? I have a complete set off my 86 357. I could send it to you. Have you checked it off a meter at engine and at dash? My old harnesses were shot and caused alot of funkie things to happen. Let me know. Mark B.

You know, those days when I wonder if it's all worth it, when I wonder if I should even bother getting out of bed...It's this type of Formula comradarie that makes coming to work here at the Bird all worth it! Sniff, sniff...
(Wow! Medallion gauges! I'm getting an '80s flashback, guys!);) |
Way to go 357!! Not many like you still around!

Gauges
I've got a whole set from a 206LS as well if the others don't work out let me know. Or anyone else who's looking to replace their stock gauges with stock. As far as I know they still work.

F3LS, I've not heard back since my returning your email. Did you get my reply. Please contact me again with your info,so we can get you what you need. Also as I said in the return mail I believe you may have a grounding problem. If you operate any other devices and you have gauge issues ie; oil pressure drop or votage changes, fuel gauge will move. Chances are its a grounding issue. Also Boilerdaddy and Mack, Thanks. I feel terrible about where this board is going and to lose TOO OLD is a loss this board will realize. Boilerdaddy if you read this mail I have some questions on Formulas 419 my dealer keeps giving me conflicting reports on its availability. Thanks, Mark B.

357, check your mail!

Ya boilerdady take care of this guy we do not want to loose him to the "dark side" I can vouche that he is a serious contender. I could have been a contender..... I could have been some body!! :D:D

On a similar note, my Gaffrig tach jumps around a bit (a few hundred RPM) at about 3000RPM, then settles back down as the rpms rise. It does make me wonder if I am reading high or accurate at full throtle though. I have talked to the selling marina, not very helpful (they are also no longer a Formula dealer I should add, good thing).
Gaffrig told me it may be noise in the wiring, how can I tell? I also do not have access to a second tach to verify the reading, hate to buy one just for testing this one. Any suggestion before I purchase a new tach? |
That tach should be adjustable. I have a Medallion tach in my 86 242. It was off by a few hundred RPM and I was able to adjust it. There should be a screw on the back, maybe covered by a rubber plug I can't remember. Get a digital tach, hook it up to the motor and adjust your guage to match the digital. Real easy.

If the tack is jumping Gaffrig makes a filter that may work. You can put it in line and it should be good.
