Fas-Tech ...wet transom??

I was at a friends tonight, 98 353, he was removing the old factory water speedo tube, found wet wood, then drilled a 1/8 hole in 3 spots to check for water, 2 of the 3 had water come out, looks to me that the transom has gotten water from where the tabs were drilled through composite floor, they drilled 2" holes through that to the transom to get the depth needed, there is bare wood there that is black, seems like it is coming from there, boat is lift kept but rain water/hosing out bilge will get water inside.

Anyone seen this in a Fas-tech before? if you have one check out the transom where the lines go to the K-planes and report back!!

Majicfloat???? anyone have issues before??

Thanks...

Its funny how boats are made to float but, not hold water. Its ashame, as you know, its all about the finish rigging.

Yea... Scotts not too happy... it is not bad enough to freak out about but will need to be dealt with..

Sometimes air pockets will develop in the voids between the many layers in the transom. If the area is repeatedly subject to water from something leaking, this condition will happen.

A good fiberglass person can repair this easily. Two seasons ago, I had pulled all the rigging off the transom to refinish the stellings boxes and had my glass guy seal all the openings with epoxy.

Does Formula still use wood in there transom? If not what year did this stop?

I think evereyone still uses wood in the transom, on a Fas-tach the transom is the only wood in the boat, as far as structure goes anyway..

The majority of the water problem stems from the exhaust cutouts, and the mufflers either not sealed properly or possibly high backpressure leaking past the exhaust hoses(mufflers are gone when boat goes back together). According to the fiberglass guy, some from the K-planes also. Nothing on the transom is original except the planes and steering(extention boxes, speedo hose, mercathode exhaust all redone by last owner). As far as I know structural wood is only in the transom. Formula advertises Divinycell(plastic) in construction, no mention of balsa. The liner is all glass filled with foam, bonded with Plexus. It sucks that I needed to do a transom, always thought it would last forever. Formula makes a great boat, but dont be naive, its still a boat.
